It is a multi pump air rifle not a 308, it doesn't make as much power as a 22 short even pumped 20 times. Be responsible, if you shoot at something alive then pump at least 10 times, keep shots within your capability to hit the target reliably. I have killed hundreds if not thousands of squirrels over my 50+ years with an 880 it is up to the task as long as the person behind the trigger does their part.

Nothing is absolute.......

Try different pellets at 10 pumps.I would try pellets of the same style, but heavier weight. I shoot several of my 880s at 8 pumps with mid weights, on paper or light pest birds. But for squirrel duty i use one particular one that shoots the piranhas well, at 10 pumps, just about 7.5 fpe . And the shots are never taken at pass 22 yards, because the pellet opens up after that to almost a 1 in group at 30. Im particular in where i hit squirrels (ear canal area, about penny size area is much weaker as the bone structure is thin, or upward shots under the jaw bone. Pellet will flatten and travel through the throat, hitting pituitary glands and stopping in the brain box) even the .22 have a hard time pushing out of the top of the head at that angle. As far as mice, rats and chipmunks, a wad cutter in the head will generally "do" the job, as it will dump most if not all its energy on impact. Those you can use less than max pumps (i use 5 pumps) and as long as they are head shots, never had a run off. But they are jittery lil ^(^^%$#^... sometimes moving at the last second...
