Let me first emphasize I respect and listen intently to ALL of you that have way more experience than me in machining parts. After all, I'm a newbie to these things. But after looking, measuring and experimenting with this adapter, I could not fight the urge to test it and see if it actually worked. I test fit it into the Foster adapter and the lockup was VERY positive and solid. There was VERY little wiggle, actually less than the steel adapter. I strapped the fill end of my my hose down because I figured the worst damage, if it failed, would be the hose end whipping around voilently before I could turn the air supply off. And this hose is only 3' long, putting my face in striking distance.
I also wore my face shield. I HAD to try this adapter under actual conditions for which it was built.
After strapping everything down, I inserted the probe into my AT44W and VERY slowly opened the bottle up. At 1000psi I stopped, looked and listened. I heard and saw nothing out of the ordinary so I pressed onward. I slowly cranked to 2000psi where I started hearing the moan and groan of the air filling the reservoir. I stopped a couple of times just to let it sit for a second, hand at the ready to shut the supply off completely. All seemed well so I carefully pressed onward. At 3000psi my reservoir gauge showed 200bar and was topped off. I quickly shut the supply off and slowly released the bleeder.
I understand the concerns and respect the opinions given. The major concern seems to be the softness of the brass and the detent balls damaging or possibly not holding when under extreme pressure. Like I said, the adapter locked in place with a VERY positive and solid click. No extreme wiggle. And the adapter will not be attached and detached very often, which would cause wear of the softer brass. But I MAY not use the adapter again, not worth the damage it COULD cause. I just had to satisfy myself that this piece will do what I cut it to do. And there again, maybe I just got lucky.

Dez... I gotta hand it too you.
May not be the right material for the application as others have said but you did a beautiful job with it and you are to be commended for it.
Good to see you getting some quality time in with the mill and lathe. Just keep on keepn' on.

Just keep an eye on the shoulder where the balls catch and watch for any wear there.... If you find none, you are probably fine....

Dez,
Beautiful looking job that required several different operations and techniques. Critical tolerances on several features that affect the functionality of the part. You are crawling pretty darn fast on that one.
That free machining brass machines so sweetly.
For turned parts, I also like 303 stainless steel. It is the only real free machining stainless and it has good strength and is readily available. It is a little harder to machine but works well and will take a polish with progressive grits of sandpaper.
Keep up the good work, but I know what you mean about not enough hours in the day.
