New design Tungsten LP3 Air Pistol

As a newbie here I would like to introduce my new air pistol design the Tungsten LP3. It is a spring pistol. I love the classic, sexy shape of air pistols from 40-80 years ago. No high tech or plastic, just beautiful blue steel and wood like walnut. I do not like so much the long pistols like the high pressure ones. They look more like a short rifle. Also a breakable barrel makes a pistol to long in size. My new design is pretty different. The barrel is fixed to the gun and the piston goes over it. To set the spring under tension, simply pop out the spring box and bring it back. I never saw this way of loading before. This keeps the pistol small and simple. A few pictures enclosed to show how it works.

I started with the 0.177" twisted barrel.
Like the Sheridan did I use a brass tube as basic material. First I use a die to get the tube on the exact diameter I want. I developed a simple rifle cutter. So I am free to make my own twisted barrel in the right shape with the exact angle of twist. I know, other materials are more better and durable but if the barrel is wear away after thousands of shots (which I don't believe
) I will just make another one in order to replace.

That is a clever rifling jig that you built. The same for the pistol design.
One thing to consider - Without any leverage on the cocking mechanism, the spring will have to be very weak. 2fpe output might be doable. Maybe make it an airsoft pistol?

Yes, very clever. Where does the spring go? in front of the piston or in between the barrel and outer tube that serves a cocking bar? does the piston move back instead of forward when firing? Sorry lot of Qs. Thanks for sharing

In fact the piston goes over the barrel, so the size of system is the half of that of a spring rifle. The piston moves back instead of forward during firing. The diameter of the spring is not that big, so I can use a spring that is much thinner in rod diameter. Less more weight to push, so it will make the pistol shock free during firing and that is a big plus. I already made the first parts.

If you know how to handle steel, you can make the most wonderfull things. I like the traditional blueing the most of all. I heat it up till 600 degrees celcius and cool it down in a special oil.

I found a nice piece of bacote wood for the handle. Hard to sand and get it in the right shape. My milling machine helped me come out.

I finished the pistol and can do the fine tuning. The first shots are great for now. Really, no hand shock.

Truly a beautiful pistol! Does the barrel go all the way to the back, and the piston is coaxial with the barrel? I like that a lot.
