Garage Barrel Band

I don't have a metal lathe or milling machine yet, much less access to a CNC machine. I can dream though. LOL
So when I look online at all of the neat custom items you can buy for airguns (and some you can't buy) I think to myself, "I bet I can make that". Just a challenge I guess. But seeing the nice barrel bands online, I decided to have a go at making one with the tools I had. I think it turned out okay, not the beauty of a CNC machined piece but looks okay and most definitely does the job.
I started with a 1/4" thick 2" wide slab of aluminum. I placed it flush against my shroud and traced the top section.
Then I drilled several holes inside the top circle. Then used a jigsaw with a metal blade to trim it out as best I could. Then used a sanding drum in my cordless drill to finish the top hole out. I slid the piece onto the shroud and up against the air tube. I traced that and repeated the process for the bottom hole.
Then I just free hand drew a pattern and cut it out on my bandsaw.
I used my benchtop belt sander to smooth everything and touch up the pattern. I used 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough sanding marks. I used a small sanding drum in my Dremel to sort of bevel the edges to knock off the sharp edges.
Then I went to Lowe's and bought some 8-32 Allen screws. I measured the center of the top and bottom of the band, automatic center punched and drill press cut 9/64th holes. Then I tapped those for the set screws. After wiping it down real well with 91% alcohol I sprayed it with Krylon semi-flat paint.
I slid it in place, tightened the set screws and took it shooting. I had to tweak the scope 3-4 elevation clicks but it was solid after that. Dead accurate at 25-30 yards. I slid it back another 2-3" from this picture just to put it where I wanted it to look more pleasing. Although not a machined beauty, I think it's not bad for a shadetree machinist. LOL
Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Looks pretty solid to me! Great job. I know how you feel with no real tools. Lol my lathe is a threaded rod with washers and lock nuts on both ends in my drill press. Just gotta think outside the box sometimes. Good job.

That looks better than some of the stuff I have seen people make with all the "proper" tools. You are proving it is more about the person than the equipment. Good Job.

Beautiful job DEZ. It's all about the vision, the tools will always be secondary, bro.

Looks great to me.My wife fears what comes out of the garage when I am on a mission. I am not handy but I try, I think that's what frightens her. All she does is look at me- then the project- shakes her head and just says "immigrant"

Dez, you have a lot more patience than I do!
Contouring the outside into the figure 8 is really difficult unless you have a CNC. Yours looks like you did!

We'll see, once I get the time to make the road trip to Gene's. Need to help make room for him to help Bob make room.
Don't think there's any fear of Gene shutting the door to the magic shop any time soon. I just hope he can OJT me on how to use the stuff!!!!
