Like any airgun, gotta find a pellet it likes. Congratulations on the acquisition. Does it have the adjustable trigger?
Mine is an early 78G (3xxx sn) and it has ultra shallow rifling. It likes most any RWS & HN pellet, but it will not tolerate any Crosmans. YMMV

Floyd I've been shooting nothing but my cast wad cutters I cast with an NOE mold that I bought quite some time ago, they're not in stock right now however Al at NOE is supposedto be making more of the wad cutter molds in .22 cal soon. I haven't bought any pellets/slugs for a long time now and doubt that I will. Those wad cutters shoot great out of allmy vintage Crosman's and both my 78G's. I use a lot of them during the winter when there's too much snow and cold for some fun indoor target plinking. I cleared out a lot of the redsquirrels in my back yard shooting them in my Crosman 362 last summer and will be doing the same this coming summer.
The rifling is excellent on both of my 78G's and honestly it don't look like they had a heck of a lot of use. A lot of time people will buy something like thatloose interest and let them sit. They both needed a complete reseal when I bought them and both are still shooting great since.
Happy birthday, happy gas tax refund, happy stimulus, or happy whatever the occasion, congratulations on the pistol. Let us know how it shoots.
I am going to have to think about getting some vermin Austin grips for this, because surprisingly these grips are made of some kind of acetate and they have started to off gass. They smell like puke ( thankfully not bad enough to stink up an entire garage like an old Vaco or Excelite screwdriver handle ) and they have grown that white powdery surface on the underside and in the screw holes.I cleaned them the best I could and most of the smell is now just on the underside, I can only really smell it if I put my nose right up to it and I suppose the easy solution would be just to not do that but if I put the gun in a case or something it would start to smell. They will have to wait a few weeks because I currently have a custom knife in the works I need to keep funds available for, but he has a waiting period on his grips anyways.

You may want to get in touch with him first, I remember reading somewhere that he will move away from custom grips and concentrate his efforts in other areas.
Stinking grips, I never heard of such. The S&W pistol I had was .22 caliber. Mine was not to accurate which is why I no longer own it. Hope you have better luck.
Vernon made me a set of ambi grips out of birdseye maple for mine and they are beautiful.I also have a set in walnut. I have 3 78gs and a 79g and they are all very accurate. Also alot of people don't know this but the the screw on cap that pierces the co2 cartridge is interchangable with the ones used on the Crosman Mark 1&2. The Crosman ones are alot easier to find used than the S&W ones if you ever need one. I once had an H&R 999 22cal. pistol that had those smelly plastic grips. I Took me months to get that smell out of my garage.
