Zack,I've never owned a Texan, but I did talk with Ton Jones about the platform. His favorite? The 308.If you want to hunt deer, then you must comply with the rules of your state. I've read that Bob Stern likes the 257.I would be inclined to go with the 357Now that I have sufficiently confused the issue, happy hunting!Hunter
My new .308 Texan SSI will start out shooting these.https://noebulletmolds.com/site/shop/bullet-moulds/308-311/311-121-rn-h5/311-121-rn-h5-rg4-cavity-gc/I have a 257 and a 457 too and have no concern with the 308 performing just as well.
I am brand new to the Texan. Mines a .457.What I found intriguing in the Texan, or most any Airforce gun, is the barrels are changeable. If you do get a .308 and don't like it, another caliber choice can be easily tried... Not like buying a whole 'nother gun.
Thanks for the replies. …The main two calibers of interest are the .308 followed by the .257…. Information and opinions were mixed on the .308,…. I might just go with the standard length or LSS… I have everything but the molds for casting, …
Based on your statements, the most proven route would be a Texan .257 (not carbine) and the Arsenal 257420 BT mold.http://arsenalmolds.com/bullet-molds/257-Bullet-boattail?limit=99999999999On paper, it looks like the .308 could be good, but so far, it has not proven to be as accurate. If you want a more likely performer, get the .257. If you want to experiment and break new ground, get the .308.
There are a few youtube vids showing an accurate .308 texan.
