I just wanted to share the muzzle brake I made...purely cosmetic. Its made out of a 1 inch oak dowel bored out. Originally it extended the barrel length but that effected my groups so I'm going to have to bore it out more so the end of my barrel is flush with the end of the brake. Not certain how to post pics here so here is a link to the Flickr photoset

Thanks for looking!

Nice BIG cocking handle ya got there ... well done !
-
Neat idea. Does the extra leverage help at all?
-
Looks very nice, Ryan.
I like it very much 8)

No, It doesn't do much for leverage. Especially now that I have to move it back flush with the front of the barrel. Just for looks. I really wish I had a lathe....I'd make those suckers out of aluminum. I think I may try my hand at a custom stock over the winter. That should be challenging....
-
Darn it, the sucker just cracked when I tightened one of the setscrews...yet another reason to go aluminum...
-
Oh well, looked good while it lasted.
At least you got to practice for your aluminum version ;)
-
It looked good long enough for pictures :)
Now it's time for round 2

Oak is ring porous. U want a hickory or elm if ur gonna stress the grain like that. They have interwoven fibers.
-
Neat idea. Maybe if the brake was longer so more of it is on the barrel, then it'll give better leverage when cocking the rifle.
-
I was able to glue it back together, and now have it mounted flush with the barrel. I'll have to take some pics. It no longer affects accuracy at all. Which is good obviously. Thanks for the tips on the wood. There is a woodworking shop in my town that I may have to make a visit too. I'd love to make one out of ebony wood, but I imagine that would be a pain in the rear and hard on my tools!
-
Ebony would definitely add some weight to it, Ryan.
Maybe that would be a good thing since it might balance it out for you to aim better.

I'm gonna toss this one out there for another look. A while back I wanted to make a shroud for an airgun, a QB-57 to be exact. I had seen pictures of one Gene dolled up and I wanted to put my own twist to one also. I did not have a lathe, mill nor the talents to use such equipment. So I went through the isles of Lowe's and thought, pondered and scrounged. Take a look at what I came up with. I would think you can do the same for just a muzzle break as well as a full shroud. This is posted on the old GTA site. Don't forget in your searching to check that site out. Still a LOT of good info stashed there.
