I hope you max out. That would make for a long couple of days but that is OK. Closest thing I'll get to a vacation this year.
Any suggestions for cheap lodging? SLO probably better than Morro Bay? I need a Hotel for Saturday night only. I'm no camper by any stretch.

I'll see you there. If anyone wants me to bring stuff please give the shop a call. 310-327-3582

I don't like to recommend motels that I have not tried. There are lots in the area. Motel 6 is usually reasonable and somewhat consistent quality. There are two or three in San Luis Obispo and one in Morro Bay.

Closest one is in Morro Bay ($64):

http://www.motel6.com/ms/check-availability.do?property=4&VID=&numberOfAdults=&arrivalDate=&departureDate=&corporatePlusNumber=&travelAgentNumber=&BTR=/G6Maps/M6ProximityResults.aspx?searchtype= (http://www.motel6.com/ms/check-availability.do?property=4&VID=&numberOfAdults=&arrivalDate=&departureDate=&corporatePlusNumber=&travelAgentNumber=&BTR=/G6Maps/M6ProximityResults.aspx?searchtype=)

And San Luis Obispo for a little less money ($50 and $54):

Scott,

I'm considering making the trip.  I have two guns that shoot under 20#, one is a 22 Gamo with a Hawke Eclipse and the other a D48 with a Hawke Sidewinder 4.5 X 14, both in 22 cal.  Neither are FT rigs by a long shot!  I shoot the Gamo best, this being my first try at FT, I assume piston hunter class?  Any suggestion on how to prepare?

I'll get my buying list together.  Can I bring you some repair guns to take back to the shop?

Scott, I'm thinking this event is really bringing norcal and socal together.  Plus so-or too, I guess.  A beautiful part of the state, and not so "dang" hot either. Looks like you and your crew have been busy.  I'm trying to get my brother to come along and help out too.  Really looking forward to it.

Tom, I'm not Scott, but have shot FT with a springer.  Get a bucket to sit on, get a bipod, then practice and get your distance/poi down.  Figure out where the gun likes to lay on the bipod, or make a cradle for it, mark the spot on your stock, then try to hold it in the bipod the same way every shot if you can.  I found that the poi can change dramatically if I lay the gun near the trigger guard as opposed to near the front end of the stock.  Scott has done better than me with a springer, can give better advice.

Tom,
That would be great. I'm surprised that you have not tried the Angeles matches in Lake View Terrace. I shot there last weekend. It is not far from Acton.

If you are good with the Gamo, that would be fine but break barrels tend to be difficult to shoot with the precision needed to do well in field target. My recommendation would be to shoot Hunter/Piston class with the D48, a stool and shooting sticks. Set the scope at 12x and you are good to go. Know your dope/holdover at all yardages from 10 to 55. The hardest part early on is estimating the distances. So practice that some.

I look forward to meeting you. Besides the shooting, you'll have a good time socializing and discussing airguns with other builders/tuners/shooters. Larry Durham, Tim McMurray, etc.

I don't mind taking guns back as long as they are boxed or cased.

Scott,
I was wondering if Cali the cattle dog would be welcome on the Morro Bay FT Range. She knows what a Hot line is and will even be tied up like a stupid dog if it means being there with everyone. She is always at the CASA matches and the Oxnard BR etc so I wanted to find out if she needs to stay home of if she could get preapproval to join the fun. An exceptional request for an exceptional critter.
It doesn't hurt to ask. I'll understand either way. Cali not so much!

I don't see any restrictions in the range rules about pets. It's up to you to keep her under control and safe when needed. She should not be out on the range or course unaccompanied. When people are shooting, she should be with you.

This is a regional match. The only AAFTA pet restrictions are for the National match, so no problem with AAFTA rules.

Title: Western States - itinerary and entries
Post by: Scotchmo on August 05, 2013, 09:09:23 PM
Less than two weeks to go.

We now have a hot hot shower and additional camping spots available with more RV hookups courtesy of the adjacent Cowboy Action shooting range. Plenty of tent camping spots as well.

August 15th - crew - early arrivals

August 16th - Friday AM - final course preparation

August 16th - Friday PM
The sight-in range will be open in the mid afternoon. Unregistered shooters can sign up at that time (space permitting). For those camping at the range, once you arrive, you won't have to leave until the match is over. Besides the normal lunches we will have other food available throughout the weekend. A BBQ dinner will be served at the clubhouse at about 6pm. Tri-tip, smoked turkey, linguica, beans, french bread. Bottled water, soft drinks and more. If you need to go into town, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo are nearby (less than 10 miles away).

August 17th - Match day one. AM
Late arrivals sign-in. The sight-in range is open at 7:30am. Self serve breakfast will be available at the clubhouse. Coffee, milk, juice, bagels, donuts, yogurt, fruit. Shooters meeting at 9am and then the match.

August 17th - PM
Lunch will be served at the clubhouse starting at 1pm. Hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled vegetables, bottled water, soft drinks, and more. The raffle drawing has been replaced with swap meet tables. If you have airguns or related items that you want to sell or trade, you are welcome to bring them out. The sight-in range will be open later in the afternoon.

For dinner, we will see about organizing a trip into Morro Bay for fish and chips at some location on the wharf. Those that want to stay at the range will have access to the BBQ and there will be some self serve food available.

August 18th - Match day two. AM
The sight-in range is open at 7:30am. Self serve breakfast will be available at the clubhouse. Coffee, milk, juice, bagels, donuts, yogurt, fruit. Shooters meeting at 9am and then the match.

August 18th - PM
Lunch will be served at the clubhouse starting at 1pm. Deli sandwiches. A variety including turkey, roast beef, ham, on soft french or sourdough, with and without the works. Potato salad. Bottled water, soft drinks and more.

Award presentation will begin as soon as the scores are tallied and posted.

It looks like we will have a very good turnout.

Sounds like well organized and a lot of fun; just too short of notice (for me). Don't know why everything is north, south or west; why no one around Fresno shoot?

I went to High School in Visalia and considered Morro Bay and Pismo the local ocean. Living in Fresno there will never be anything closer to you unless you do it. Join the fun. Fresno will never be an FT place unless you issue hydration vests. Too freaking HOT!

I dunno Shep, Fresno is pretty darn close from where I sit, about 12 hours north.  There was a guy, Brad Miller, who used to host informal FT shoots up near Coarsegold.  PM me if you are interested and I'll get you his contact info.

Yup, Fresno is about as close as you can get for most likely to be attending this shoot.
If it makes ya feel any better  ??? just crunched mileage numbers to get there from here ... @ 325 miles each way  ;)

Shep
Shep,
Fresno is practically in our backyard. Dan House is driving over 1200 miles. A few from Oregon are driving 500-600 miles. Most people are driving over 200 miles. For you, only about 2-1/2 hours to make the 140-150 mile drive from Fresno.

If you want to try out field target and socialize with other airgun enthusiasts and shooters, this is a great opportunity.

There should be two 3000psi scuba tanks on the course with standard foster fill adapters. If you can get by with 2600-3000psi maximum fills, you should be OK. If you need higher pressures, you will have to make your own arrangements.

I'll have a big yellow 3600 PSI Tank and a double male fitting. Bring tank and yoke with Foster Female on hose end and Top up at will.
I'm really looking forward to this very well planned match. Scott is doing an outstanding job and I get the feeling this will become a Historic moment for Western/Left Coast Airgunners. This seems to be the first time we have attracted more than a fraction of competitors from other parts of the country. The coming together of North, Central and South with some shooters from other states is a bit like the Floridians shooting against the CT guys i in Pulaski and Californians showing up to play.
This really is starting to feel like a National Program. It is near to my heart to see this happening as it has been a goal for decades to reach this level. Thanks to so many people for helping to make this a reality. I know Rodney Boyce is looking down and saying "HAVE A GOOOOD TIME! KEEP IT FUN."
Be sure to practice your kneelers and standers as discipline shots will be a key element. Good Luck to ALL. See you there!

I'm going to pick up my 3300psi S90 tank just back from hydro with a fresh fill. We will have it there as well.

As Tim said, practice your designated shots. Most of the 30 lanes will be free position shots but there will also be one lane each, standing, kneeling, and prone. A mat will be provided.

Yes you can. You can even shoot the event on Sunday. The front range is a public range. The CCFEF back ranges are competition ranges controlled by various clubs. They are are open to the public for all competitions.

I will be mostly out at the range starting tomorrow. If anyone needs to reach me, best to call or text (805)two three four - 4963.

Unless you are taking the scenic (long) Highway One route from Northern California, you will most likely be coming into the area via Highway 101. Whether coming from the north or south on Highway 101, the easiest way to get to the range on Highway One is via San Luis Obispo.

You will take the Morro Bay/HWY One exit and head north. You will be on Santa Rosa Street for awhile until it becomes Highway One. About 7.5 miles north of San Luis Obispo, the Gilardi road turnoff will look like this:

You will see a gate on the right that will be open for the match. Go through the gate and hang a right. Follow the road for about one mile to the back ranges. Look for the Field Target signs.

Finished helping with the nets so the birds won't get to the wine grapes. ;D made it to the field target shoot on sunday, a 5hr. drive left Auburn at Odark:30 and got to the shoot about 11:00 ;D things were well under way at that time. Mr. Mac1 was there so I gave him my Silver Streak to be steroided  ;D  now the wait is on  :(  and you TX guy's think you have a though time waiting ;D  I've had this gun for 50yrs. bought it used for $15 or $20 at that time. the only shooting I did was with my camera ;D  met both Scotts and talked with a few other people about scoring and what positions to shoot at each lane. I think the next time I go I can talk my wife into going because if she get bored she can go into town or enjoy the beach ;D She grew up in Salinas and likes that type of environment, cool air and the ocean breeze  ;)

I had to cancel, due to last minute family obligations.  I think I might have cleaned the course, though, had I been able to make it.  But then, I usually shoot pretty well in my own mind, from 600 miles away.   Is that Tim's dog Callie in the picture?  Looks like a great turnout and well organized.  Congratulations to all who participated, and especially to the organizers and volunteers.

Thanks for posting the pics.

Jon,
Yes that is my cattle dog Caliber AKA CALI. She knows what a cold and hot line is so she can be off leash at matches and stay near me or go seek shade like she normally does. The more shade you throw the more likely Cali will hang out with you during the match.

Just rolled in back home Monday @ 3:30 PM having stayed over Sun night with Scott & Alan hull to pick up all the targets and do a general clean and put away.
705 miles driveway to match and home again.
Scott and his "group" did a outstanding job !! ... lanes were tough, food was plentiful & a good time seemed to be had by all @ 44 in attendance.

Wow, I went to school at Cal Poly and didn't even know this place existed.  Guess I was too busy studying.   :o

I got the range wound down today. Thanks Motorhead and RB for helping out a little extra last night. I made some new friends that are also GTA members. It was a fantastic match. Thank you everyone for competing. I want to have our club do the Western States match each year from here on out.

I will get a report up but it might be a day or two. I appreciate the pictures as I took very few this time. For a match of this size, being the match director is difficult enough, but trying to compete as well is too much for me. I realized that as I was walking back after finishing the last lane on Sunday. We were way out on the East course and the walk seemed very long. I was totally wiped out by that time and we still had a lot to do. Thank you to JimC for arranging to get the targets pulled and TimmyMac1 for hauling them back to the parking area.

There are plenty of other Grand Prix matches that I can compete in. So I plan on focusing on the task of match director at the 2014 Western States match. We hope to make it even bigger and better next year.

Don't give up shooting to be match director. You can do both if you delegate. It was overwhelming the first time but as long as you have good support you can still shoot and be match director and Trophy presenter. You just needed more sleep and some more helpers. I never want to see match directors not shooting. That doesn't seem right.
You did an awesome job. Thanks for all you did. I hope you showed a profit & club kitty built up.

Tim,

I can travel to lots of other matches and let others do the work while I concentrate on shooting. The dedicated match director position would be for just one match a year. At some point when we have others assume that role, then I may shoot. I never considered myself a great multitasker. If I can focus on the main goal at hand, I can do a good job. I had fun competing against my "arch rivals" James and Jeff. But my main goal for the Western States was to run a good match for our guests. At the nationals in Texas, it will be to do my absolute best shooting (and have fun).

It looks like the donations more than covered the extra food and drinks. The rest will go into the club kitty for future range improvements.
