Some 880s - and musing

Hi all,
I've accumulated a few new to me 880s recently and thought I would share
in the picture - from top to bottom
1980 - metal receiver and pump lever
1981 - metal receiver and pump lever
1988 - metal receiver and pump lever - got this for my 11th birthday in 1988
2003 - plastic receiver and pump lever
The 1980 does not hold air. I've communicated with @ronno6 through ebay and I think I will get his seal kit for this gun. ultimately I'll probaby sell it when fixed. this past week I thought It was going to start holding air as I got it to start holding a little better and put a few pumps in and it held overnight - I thought the pressure might help seal the cup to the tube or something, but then I got greedy and tried it a second night and afterward it stopped holding again. seal kit it is.
The 1981 holds air and shoots great. Chrony'd it yesterday and it's averaging 650fps with 7.2g lead pellets which seems quite good actually. I'll likely sell this gun as is.
The 1988 gun - as mentioned above is my gun and will never be sold. it stopped holding air at least a decade or more ago but I had quit shooting it only a couple years after getting it because the stock became super loose and it was impossible to shoot with any accuracy. David Baker resealed it about 7ish years ago. It's definitely weaker than it originally was after the reseal. Shoots 7g pellets right at 600fps, and 8.3g pellets at 570fps, but is most accurate with the crossman 10.5 grain heavies and shoots them at 517fps. It's actually incredibly accurate. and bizarely quiet. makes almost no noise. weird.
The 2003 gun - holds air and shoots fine, actually better than fine. Chrony'd yesterday at 671 fps with 7.2g pellets. I'll sell this one as well.
and now a little of my personal history with the 880 as it's pretty significant.
I actually learned to shoot and hunt with an old metal 880. one that looked very much like the '80 and '81 models pictured above. I think the gun technically belonged to my much older cousin, but for whatever reason it lived in our garage. I learned to shoot with that gun when I was maybe 8 or 9. I was only allowed to shoot it with 3 pumps. Around that time my grandparents moved close to us and lived on an old farm and my grandfather taught me shooting and hunting skills by "hunting" grasshoppers. They were surrounded by huge cow pastures and had a super long dirt driveway that was full of grasshoppers - like those really big green and brown mottled flying ones. We would spot them and stalk them and then I had to hit them with the 880.
One day we spotted a bobwhite quail across the fence sitting on a branch. My grandfather told me to pump up a few more times - to I think about 7 pumps total and use the fence as a rest and aim for the head. I nailed that bobwhite in the head and I was estatic and my grandparents heaped praise on me and likened me to the great hunters of their day. What great memories.
anyways, the 880 will always be special to me.
