Title: Cometa 400/Fusion barrel hinge screw removal problem
Post by: DEAN on September 20, 2022, 06:57:15 PM
Trying to remove the big screw that holds barrel hinge in and it will not budge, little set or stop screw is out so that's not the problem, on the few videos I could find where they remove it they just unscrew it easily.. I'm using a big screwdriver and cranking on it as hard as I can and it wont budge, it looks almost like its a pin instead of  screw but if so why the slotted screw head. Also tried a bit of heat didnt help.

Could be rusted. Liquid SWrench. Blue or red lock tite.

Not rusted, betting loc tite but not sure how much heat I can apply to it and not hurt anything.

When taking out a barrel pivot bolt the gun needs to, not cocked, but at least broke open. No tension on it.

What Tim said.

If the barrel is locked, there's plenty of tension on the pivot bolt, preventing it from turning.

The first step in any breakbarrel pivot bolt removal scheme is to break the barrel, to break the tension. Then things start turning.

tried it broken open and closed no go either way.

Got tired of trying to get screw loose and just knocked pin out of the cocking arm brace and took it off. This thing had been shooting great but I dont see how there was grease everywhere up on piston seal and on the piston itself real thick..thought Id bought a piston seal for it but guess not so have to order one now.

Found the piston seal, degreased cleaned everything up put new seal on, was going to put in a new spring but the oem spring still looks great so just relubed lightly polished spring ends and reinstalled.. dieseled first 4 or so shots then settled down, shot cycle seems smoother then before. Will shoot a 100 or so pellets then run thru chrony and see if new piston seal made any difference.

I use a soldering iron to loosen frozen bolts and screws. I hold the tip on the head and apply heat for two or three minutes. It works surprisingly well.

Artie that's a good idea, I used a small propane torch and heated it till it was hot enough I couldn't touch it and it still wouldnt come loose, so just knocked pin out of the cocking shoe rod or whatever it is called. It was a pain getting pin back in with the tiny washers but still easier and faster then taking/getting bolt out.

Looks a lot like some of my Hatsan pivot bolts. I used a LARGE flat blade screw driver and custom ground it down to perfectly fit the slot. These fastener heads are soft steel and will get badly damaged if the tool is not a perfect fit.

On one of my Mod135s I put the action in a padded vise and could not budge the pivot bolt with all the strength/grip I could muster. Then I clamped a large pair of vise grips to the screwdriver for leverage and leaned into it! I was able to "crack" the threaded bolt loose with the added leverage.

If you don't NEED to remove that bolt, I suggest you leave it as is. Your solution worked well.

I had a break barrel I noticed the yoke in the front of the receiver the barrel block fits in was bent out a little on one side. Getting the pivot bolt out was very difficult cause the hole was not aligned. Back porch, a couple of towel and a hammer. Stuck the yoke out past the edge of the porch so I didn't bend the other side while straighenting the bent side. Pivot bolt went back in much easier cause the holes were straight and enline.
