I recently started shooting airguns, and I've been working my way up to longer shots, though I've been a bit limited by conditions and location. What type of ammo would you recommend for 100+ yard shots with a .177? I'll be shooting them from a Gamo Shadow Whisper break-barrel.
I have some Gamo TS-10 pellets that are marketed for "long-range accuracy," as well as Gamo Armor and Raptor Pba pellets. I also have some slugs on the way here, both lead (10gr JSB Knockouts) & Pba (8.5gr ZAN). The Armors are extremely accurate and light, so I'm curious about how they would perform at range? I don't know much about the Raptors, bc they break the sound barrier, and irritating my neighbors could get me kicked off the property where I do most of my shooting. Currently saving those for a trip to the shooting range. If anyone has experience using these for long-range shooting, how did they work and what was the range? Any other ammo you would recommend?
I'm also curious about how far most skirted pellets can be fired with any accuracy?
Lastly, I could really use a rangefinder, so any recommendations for an affordable one would really be appreciated.

You'll have to find what pellet your rifle likes. A good quality domed pellet will most likely give best results... JSB 8.4gr, 10.3gr, H&N FTT (4.52mm) or Baracuda 10.6gr, JTS 10.4gr, Crosman 10.5gr or the like would be a good starting place, no guarantees though. You could get lucky and your rifle likes Crosman 7.9gr hollow points or some other easy to find (and inexpensive) pellet. You'll have lots of testing to do. Maybe those TS-10's will work out great.
I haven't had much luck with slugs in spring/gas piston guns, others may have...
Once reaching out there wind will be a big factor in accuracy or lack of, especially with a .177. On a seemingly calm day I'm very happy with a 4"-ish five shot group shooting a spring/gas piston rifle at 100-ish yards (*Using a Diana 54, 460 or HW97 rifles, or the like). Don't get discouraged if you're getting 8"+ groupings, the slightest breeze really pushes pellets around (and springers aren't the most stable platform). Wind markers of sorts to will be very helpful. If your constantly getting 3" groupings or better... Well, I'd say you have outstanding springer skills and you could probably teach me a thing or two, Lol. Also...With budget break barrels I'm happy keeping all my shots on a paper plate sized target @ 100y with fliers and poor wind calls, but I've seen folks do much better. Guess it depends on skill, barrel lottery and wind conditions. Lots of groups posted on the forum, might take some searching to find.
In all reality, anything at/beyond 55-60(ish) yards is long range for springers and what most would consider the limit for "decent" accuracy. Some do great out to 75-80 yards... in the right conditions I suppose 150+ yards is possible (that being extreme ranges, IMO). Wind drift could be measured in feet (or yards
) at those ranges with pellets, especially when gusty. There are folks that post trick shots on balloons or other reactive targets at 200+ yards with springers on YT, but I wouldn't consider that "the norm".
As for range finders, look for sales. Also make sure they take easy to get batteries. Mine was some cheap-o amazon special that took AAA batteries.
