Repurposing rifle barrels for PCP
Goldxxx:
Could regular rifle barrels be repurposed for a PCP rifle. I’m talking 6mm\.243, 30 cal, even .270 maybe? If someone was fortunate to have a few higher end take off rifle barrels.
These were taken off new rifles that the owners wanted to customize them with higher quality barrels. Some are already in oddball calibers like 300WSM and 270 WSM that can’t really have their chamber recut to a different caliber due to the thin barrel taper near the chamber.
Can the chamber be cut off, taper cleaned up and reused? I understand that the barrel twist might not be ideal with lighter air rifles slugs. And I know that there might not be a market for a .270( .277) slug.
I just want to use what I have on hand in my shop. Some geographical locations are limited for supplies.

Some yes, many others no. I do believe there was a chart posted on here some time ago detailing which bores/calibers work. Though, the twist rate will be a factor due to velocity differences.
I know .308 will work for .30 caliber pellets, as the shirt will take a seat, though the pellet head is a bit smaller.
I've used .357 pistol barrel blanks in 1:20 twist for .35 pellets on builds, but those barrels will only work for pellets I found. Slugs simply will not chamber. Very tight and will require nearly powder burner pressures to send them to speed.
NonGrata:
Sure you could.
A suggestion: Look for ammo that can be pushed through the bore BEFORE you sacrifice a barrel. Once you find ammo that will fit your barrels the answer is yes so cut and drill away.
Obviously casting custom pellets is also an option.

I would think that barrels made for black powder firearms would be ideal given the lesser disparity in typical projectile velocities

Duane38, I have some blanks in the same .357 1-20 twist so I possibly start with one of those. Is this slug an off the shelf purchase? Could I possibly buy a mold to cast my own?
NonGrata, air rifle pellets or slugs need to be able to easily be pushed through a rifled bore with little resistance? The only thing I have had to push through a barrel lately is a bronze brush. Would it go through with light resistance like a tight cleaning patch? I once had a squib 9mm round get stuck in a Browning Hi Power barrel. It was a bear to remove with a hammer and brass rod. And I only had to move it 4 inches
