Updating/accurizing 890

I have an 890 for close to 20 years now. Was never an accurate rifle. Just recently installed an adapter with 10 degree droop and replaced the scope with a 4X32 Hawke. Turns out the gun is a decent shooter. Shot it over the chrony an it shoots around 740-750 fps. Used to get 850ish brand new with 10.5 CPHP. Now looking to get tighter groups and increased fpe. I've never tuned or have experience on tuning. Any advice on tuning and possibly converting to gas ram? Thanks in advance

Hey, don’t know much bout the 890, looked it up, seems like a decent gun, iv’e worked, on repaired a few spring power guns, and actually it’s not too bad a job to do, we’re i you i’d Get in touch with vortek air gun spring outfit, don’t know the website or whatever, just let google look it up, u can call them, ask all questions, they are very helpful, probably just get a fresh spring and seal, clean everything up real well, and you should be in business, I guess mebbe less than forty dollars, and some greasy mebbe pinched fingers, and your’e in shooting business again, i’d Leave it a springer, they cock a little easier, and actually they all shoot about the same when you get around to it, some folk will argue the point, my impression, piston is ok, spring ok, mebbe little noiser, cheaper by a little, hope this helps or might get you better reply, or wake them up anyhow

The 890 is pretty much a B19 clone, basically the same power plant that Gamo uses today in all of their air rifles. It uses the older GRT III trigger replacement, an E3650 spring and Gamo Tesla Seal from ARH, don't call Gamo USA as they want an FFL to get parts...
I have repaired a bunch of these type of guns if you are interested in me doing the work send me a message...

the B19 are copies of the old Gamo springers that had the all steel trigger group, that they copied from Theoben who copied it from BSA. lol

I had an 890 yrs ago! it was a decent shooting rifle! they need some TLC tho, up grading the rifle with better seals and spring and GRT trigger will make a huge difference in accuracy if u have found the best pellet for the barrel? The 890 is no longer made I don't think and I haven't seen any for sale in along time, this why u don't hear about them much anymore, good luck with it and if ur not up to the task of tuning it? I see O T Cat has offered to help u out
I'm sure he will do you a good job!

I've often gained significant power in old springers by replacing or shimming the breech seal. You can test the seal by shooting a pellet in a safe direction with a small piece of tissue laying over the breech junction. If the tissue gets blown off, you have a leaky seal. The Crosman part B20‐00‐3 should fit the Gamo (call Crosman and order extras; they're cheap.) In a pinch, you can carefully pry the old seal out and shim the bottom of the seal groove with material such as dental floss and reuse your old seal.
Not a full tune, but an easy way to regain lost power without opening the gun.
Have fun!

Hi navykg
I also have an 890 and was in the same boat as you (not your kayak) i am in the process of updating /tuning mine so far I've done the trigger mod using 5x8x2.5mm RC car wheel bearing its made HUGE difference in accuracy.I've ordered new breach seal from chambers UK and also some piston seals from Russia its important to deburr all the cut out slots for trigger, spring pin etc,,there is also a twin spring mod for max power from Russia fleabay uk,,you might want to check customairseals Australia they sell an uprated 25mm piston seal its blue and fits straight on. The gun is the easiest gun to work with it comes apart and reassembles in a flash

There are several good suggestions out there. Perhaps you should determine what you plan to DO with the gun. Generally a less powerful gun is more accurate. Many people get a different spring to slow their guns down. If you're killing paper perhaps you should give consideration to keeping the original spring. DO replace the trigger with a GRT III from charliedatuna.com. That can be done by simply removing the stock. It's pretty simple to go through the gun yourself if you're mechanically inclined. If not, I'm sure OleTomCat will do a fantastic job. He's somewhat of the resident Gamo guru. If you go that route ask if you can send the gun without the stock. Postage is horrible on a complete gun. I'd figure $50 EACH WAY!!

This is a great thread. I came to this forum to try to get more info on my own 890. This thread seems to confirm that it uses a coil spring. I could've swore, when I bought it, that it was a gas piston. I guess I should open her up.
Thanks for this info guys. (Gals?)
