What level of shooting accuracy should a person strive for to be competitive in HFT piston class. Using everyday items to judge by Quarter, Nickle, Dime. I KNOW yardage estimation and other stuff comes into play. I'm talking at known distances for now, just a little something for a barometer to go by. Something to give some ideas if their equipment is up to the challenge. Example should I be able to hit a Quarter 75% of the time at 55 yards and a dime 90% of the time at thirty yards?? Not looking for an exact science just a rule of thumb.
It depends on what your goals are. When I can get half my shots inside a 1 inch circle at 25 yards, I know that I can shoot a match with that rifle and maybe have a chance of placing mid pack in Hunter/Piston (if I do everything else right). If I want to win a regional or national Hunter/Piston match, I would want to see at least half my shots inside a 1/2" circle at 25 yards. An occasional flyer is not usually a deal breaker in Hunter/Piston.Besides the rifle accuracy, your range estimating accuracy will be a big factor. If you are off by more than 3 yards in your range estimate, you won't hit a 50 yard target with a 12fpe rifle. Practice your range estimating.Your dope must be very accurate as well.Accurate rifle, accurate ranging, accurate dope - all are important.
Ahhhhhh.....but ya left out the biggest variable for ALL field target shooting......GUESSING THE WIND DRIFT!...

Well guys I wondered how long it would last. Just after I finished getting the scope set up. My daughter and I were shooting foam golf balls scattered all over the yard we had them from 25 to forty yards. It was shooting great even with the wind, then between shots I had a 14 inch poi drop. I changed out scopes to no avail, still poi lower than elevation capacity. Checked it over chrony and velocity seems okay?(if chrony was right) l'm stumped at the moment and don't have it in my heart to tear it down and figure it out.
