I'm shooting my first HFT (and for that matter, first air rifle match) this weekend.
A lifetime ago I shot a lot of military High Power matches so matches per se aren't new. However FT is. I've been practicing my Google Fu and been reading everything I can find on the web.
I have a Hatsan 87QE with a UTG 3-9x40AO True Hunter scope. I'm making myself a nice pair of ash shooting sticks and I have a small round cooler (about 14" tall) to set on (and carry lunch/water). I made myself a set of mil-dot range charts for target widths of 3/8" up to 5".
From what I've read, I should site in the scope to be 3/8" high at 25 yards.
At this point I'll be very happy if I at least hit all the targets. A HUGE plus would be to actually be in the KZ and get a point.
What else can you guys offer?

Well...how much is your budget?
Like Eric said, the .177 marauder is good platform.
I'd say shoot some of our AG's on May 22 and see what you like. The BAM I use was not expensive, but I did have local guru Motorhead give it a proper FT makeover
.
I have had the pleasure of shooting others guns and its helped me form a better opinion on what I shoot vs others and what I might switch to down the road.

Practice your range estimation and have a good dope sheet for your rifles trajectory. Relax and have fun above all else.
The guys on here were really helpful when I asked some questions about it last year, real good information.
