Title: sub 12 ft lb vs. 18 ft lbs observations
Post by: bubba zanetti on January 05, 2017, 10:34:16 AM
Finished up my second year in shooting FT and loving it! Last year shot (and the very beginning of this year) with the BAM which shoots at 18 ft lbs and the rest of the season with the AA HFT500 which shoots 10.8 or 11.2 ft lbs. depending upon which pellets I use from JSB.

Now that is not much FT shooting under my belt, but one observation is really sticking out to me and that is my scores are basically even ??? Also, shooting in wind, I did not notice a huge difference in my pellets getting blown around. Yes, the slower 8 grains out of the AA did move more, but not drastically so.

I don't know, I am surprised by this experience and wanted to throw it out there to other FT shooters to see what you have noticed in your shooting.

I have been thinking of trying the HFT and planned to tune my 177 mrod down to keep it under the max FPE, though had planned to be just under by a pound or so.   interesting to hear it made little difference for you going from 18 to ~12

I went from 17 to 12.5 fpe and had the same experience. I believe it would be more pronounced if it were .22 cal and not .177 we were shooting.

It is a common occurrence that WFTF guys ( PCP ) can and often do shoot along side or OUT SHOOT the Open or Hunter (PCP ) guys.

I find the die hard WFTF guys generally to be VERY SERIOUS about the game with many also shooting at National & International venues as the Europeans play the game.

I shoot in the hunter class at our local Ft range in Heflin, AL in both piston and PCP classes depending on my decision for that day. I have my PCP tuned to 18.5 FPE using JSB 10.34s and my piston guns at 14 to 15 fpe using either 8,44s or 10.34s and for me I can tell the difference between the power levels as well as the pellet weights as far as wind drift and flatter trajectories. Our range is a combination of hills and hollows and open fields so we have all sorts of different wind conditions. The wind does push the lighter pellets around more especially on the targets that are up on hills since the wind will be coming over the top of the hill and blow the pellets down from a head on direction. It a very challenging course and is usually set up with 15 lanes with 2 targets per lane with two shots per target with a Troyer scale of 35.

We have several current and past national champions in our club that shoot both WFTF or Open and have a wealth of info to share and do so freely. They indeed are very serious about their FT shooting and have guns and scope in the several thousands of dollars range and do clicking of vertical turrets in every lane so they only have to hold off for windage not elevation.

I have been shooting for a little over two years now and really enjoy the camaraderie and experience I have gained from the more experienced shooters.
