open/aperture/scoped springer

More an indictment on social-security aged eye balls than accuracy….but we shoot with what God gives us.
An 8 year old cheap springer….happened to be able to use all three sights. Was something like $90-$99 when they closed out the plastic stocked CZ 634’s. But it could use the 3 main sight systems:
Good open iron.
Adaptable to an aperture type rear.
Scoped.
(After 7-8 years, I should just buy a new can of gray paint and cover up the ugly).

Ignoring WHERE the 10 shots clustered. All three if them sights go “clicky-clicky” and adjust, I just didn’t bother to adjust and poaid attention to the cluser size more than the location.
“CHEATED” on the target...the big 1 ½” square was just about right for the width of the front sight. The n3/4” ceneter white squre was just about right for a 4X scope.
Started with open….then to aperture rear...then to 4X scope.
Ended up with this: (on ¼” graph paper for you to measure how you care to):

Compared to the dime, open sights were worth about 6 of 10 hits.
Aperture worth more like an 8 or 9 of 10.
4X scope a 10 of 10 on a dime sized target.
DID NOT EXPECT the scope to remount so nearly dead on to previous zero.
Better eyes and more practice would make that better...but likely the same kind of PERCENTAGE of of size increase.
:
Why old guy’s old-eyes need a scope...even a low powered scope.
Apertures work pretty well in bright light and well defined sharp edged targets. They not so good in low light, oddly shaped, dull colored targets on a dull colored back ground.
No so much magnification, but definition….sorting out a odd shaped gray/brown fur from tgray/bown tree bark..at dawn or dusk.. is not what aperture or open iron sights do well.
Consider that the only light that gets into your eye is the light that passes though the tiny hole in the aperture….and ½ the light (the lower half of the rear sight) is blocked by traditional open sights.
No accurate way to guess hold over or hold off for wind other than a scope.
---------
Any way...had fun on my “unplugged” Saturday….cock/shoot...repeat as needed for as long as you’d care to.

Great post! Thanks. I'm 55 and need reading glasses. I can't shoot regular open sights unless I'm outdoors and it's bright out. Peeps are a blessing. I find in dimly lit areas target acquisition is not good with the small 0.050" aperture I normally use. THEN again in the same circumstances scopes stink too.. I'll have to experiment with the standard 0.094 apertures in less than perfect lighting. I have tried the ghost ring routine and the brass colored low light apertures with no improvements. That's my experience. Your milage may vary. Thank you for posting a thread that should be useful to many.

Kind of a "cheat"....it's just a 10-11 foot pound springer, so it does not try and tear apart the scope or the mounting.
Could live with the aperture for bold targets in good light at one range.....scope for dull colored targets on a dull background in dim light.

We double up on our favorite springers so we can keep one set up with iron sights and the other set up with a scope. I still enjoy shooting iron sights. both peep and open, but good lighting is hard to come by at times in our backyard range, so scopes really are a must if we want to shoot a lot.
Speaking of Slavia springers, we recently picked up a Slavia 631 Lux in good condition. Fun little springer. Easy to shoot. had to order up some 13mm rings for it so I can scope it.

Do like the simple nature of the CZ’s. Being able to take the low stressed rifle apart without a spring vice, steel, good simple trigger, and a CZ barrel.
Nothing fancy..and in today’s market where speed sells….people quit buying them (at least in the US).
Go back about 13-15 years, and there were a lot of posts….mostly hot-rodding them for more power (which I resisted) One of those things that seemed “everyone” was doing at the same time...like a “fad”.

Gave up...was out of gray paint and didn’t want to run to the store.
So I cleaned it...put an even cheaper 4X scope on top...and painted the plastic stock with the paint I had on hand (black).

YEP...it’s even uglier….don’t care.
Sighted the new scope in and tired it cleaned….it’;s an even CHEAPER 4X scope.

For a 10 shot group, that;’s really good for 25 yards.
Still thinking $$ spend does not always equal results.

Just recieved two Williams target peeps and have yet to install them. 71 here and had distance only cataract surgery, that being me only option. It positively killed my blade and notch iron sights but thankfully the receiver sights still do well for me. Admittedly, they are not all around sights but, for indoor use or short range daylight hunting, still suffice. (Think old pre-scope twenry-two's with which great-granddad bagged all those squirrels and bunnies.) A cheap airgun, you say? Inexpensive the CZ's are, yes, but cheap they are not. Love my 631.

Nice shooting. Shows, once again, that you don't need to spend a ton of money to get a good shooting air gun.

67 here. I used to enjoy open sight shooting. Then my eyesight worsened. If I try to shoot a rifke niw with regukar open sights, I literally see two front posts. One is like a ghost. I would like to see if a peep site setup might help, but don't want to spend the miney on on if it isn't going to work for me. So, rifle scopes it is.

The triple-sighting system target tells me that the air rifle is rather good. As is the eye behind the trigger.
