Blowing Burst Disks

Well I have a Protoyz 13ci hpa tank. It came regulated at 800psi. It had a stack of thinner belleville washers and shims. I replaced the stack with the (12) Mcmaster Carr size everyone recommends, with 2 shims= 0.30 . So I fill by hand pump, good up to 1500 psi then burst disk blows, so far 4 times. Is the regulator junk?
Any ideas?

I’ve had 1.8k burst disks rupture at around 1500psi on multiple occasions. If your burst disks are all from the same production run, they may all have a similar rupture point. It’s not indicative of anything wrong with the regulator itself.

I've run into similar ,but, a word of caution here. I test , and trust my test. I think once in a while you will run into what I call a light run. I'll trust my own test before some of the china stuff out there now. As long as you know your safe, you can adjust with what you have to buy to get by. With this cra- p going on it might mean an extra pair of shorts now and then. Cause , When they let go , it's un nerveing . Funny thing is, you just don't seem to get used to the, " bang". Seems like most will err on the light side . I suppose there might be some thought of liability but , being where there from , I DOUBT IT>

Over torqueing can lower the failure pressure.

Take out one shim and see what happens.... The regulator setpoint is obviously over 1500 psi, and your burst discs can't cope....

My experience:
I have 9 ci Tippmann bottles and replaced the thinner Bellevue washers with .032" washers.
With 12 washers got 1450 psi, 11 washers and a .020" shim gets 1150 psi.
The Ninja regs in the YouTube video are different than other manufacturers, that's all.
In this case, less is actually more.

To make things more safe and less frustrating------
Have a test rig so you KNOW output pressure vs guessing.
The mini test tank isn't required, you can also fill the tank with airsoft bb's, etc to take up space-this will equal less pumping. But an on-off, venting ASA adapter with a pressure guage is well worth the $20 investment.

Is there a life cycle for the discs ? I have some over 10 years old.

Not based on age but the diaphragm will fatigue after going through many up & down pressure cycles. For example, some people have experienced failures associated with the pulsing from a compressor.

If it’s blown the replacement bust disk, good idea to believe the burst disk is getting more pressure than you expected. First could have been faulty, but busk disk are too simple to lie twice.
Enough variation that one guy’s stack may not get the same results in yours. Much better to set up a simple gauge system to check output.

I once had a Co2 paintball tank that blew a couple of disks for no apparent reason.
Turned out that the plug that held the disk into the valve had a burr on the center hole that was cutting into the disk.

I have a test gauge, it was the burst Disks. Rechecked belleville washers and shim stack. Put in a new 1.8k disk. Pumped up to 1000psi, tested output only 1300psi. Waited and hour an pumped up to 2000psi, retested output 1300psi. Pumped up to 3000psi, still holding no blown disk. They were Capt Oring ones, got a different brand, good for now.
