Diana Model 30 Sportmodell

I thought I wanted the new Diana K98 replica until I picked it up at the show last week, the thing is a quality build but it must weigh over 10 lbs and very nose heavy. I looked at an older version Model 30 Sportmodell and it was just right, it felt like a quality piece, problem is they wanted $400. Anyone have one of these?

The model 30 is a pre-WW2 design, very nice but rare and valuable.
If you want the Mauser look in a more svelte package that is affordable and good-shooting, find a good Diana model 50. That rifle was made from the early 1950's to the early 80's, and is more or less the post-war descendant of the model 30, with some details in common. There are a lot of guns and parts out there, too. The 50 is one of the great classic tap-loading underlevers, and a personal fave.
Here's a link to some pics on the Vintage Diana forum:

Thanks for the info, those look very nice. Maybe the model 30 at $400 was not so bad?

Here's the link to the whole Gallery page on the Vintage Diana forum. There are also some nice photos and comments on the model 30 (and a lot of other totally cool old Dianas) if you scroll down:

$400 is not too bad a price, if the gun is in really good condition. I wouldn't pay that for one with any visible damage or rust.
Which gun is best for you is, as always, a function of what you like, and how you plan to use it! The model 30 is a beauty, but a rare and collectible gun with no modern parts support. It's also fairly small and low-powered, originally designed just to teach youngsters to shoot, of course.
The model 50 is a bigger and more powerful rifle, but one that still handles nicely (it truly will make you think of a Mauser 98 when you pick it up--which I strongly suspect was no accident, considering when and where it was made). The action was based on the model 35, a simple barrel-cocker that was made for many years, so there are still plenty of examples and dealers with parts out there.
BTW Diana made a completely different "model 30" rifle after the war. It was a bolt-action-cocking, lead-ball shooter, made for shooting galleries. The action is similar to the Haenel pre-war model 33, and post-war model 310.
