Title: Bringing together a vintage display - warning English pistol
Post by: 45flint on February 05, 2019, 10:32:37 AM
Fun when you buy a vintage gun and you can eventually reconnect the original pieces.  Bought this absolutely mint 1946 Webley Senior Pistol last year. It was the first production after the War and was transitional in that it retained some prewar parts: trigger and grips.  Found a box on the bay that was prewar but probably appropriate cause they were using up the older boxes when they first started shipping.  The period correct pellets arrived this week sealed and unused, a hard find on the bay.  The box was the crazy find, they didn’t make that many slant grip Seniors before the war.

That's a beautiful collectable you have there Steve!  I'll never forget a good old friend that bought a brand new Webley back in the 70's which more than likely he still has and would probably never part with.  I should give him a call and catch up cause it's been several years since I've talked with him.

Purchased my first Webley Tempest this week.  A nice pistol at a good price.  I now see what the fus is about.
You have a nice pistol,  thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous gun Steve. The Webley is probably the only non American made model I would ever consider buying. It just oozes out quality.

looks nice Steve but the webleys never really appealed to me and other the years I've had a few of the later tempest's hurricanes and typhoons but all were sold on
always preferred BSA's as a kid and still have a mk2 scorpion somewhere

Since your in the UK it surprises me that the Early Webley urge never hit you.  The later Tempest and Hurricanes really don’t interest me either.  My first air Pistol was a Hurricane that I still have.  Descent shooter but lost all of its grace and blued milled quality from the past.  The BSA Scorpion to me is so huge and unexciting being a break barrel.  Seriously, I’ve been collecting for several years now and initially concentrating on spring air pistols.  I found no pistol their equal in reproducing a 22 LR pistol experience, with the quality of a Colt Woodsman.

Beautiful. I should have headed the warning. I hope these show up at air gun shows every so often for decent prices. A classic blued Webley (or any well blued gun really) is so memorizing to look at (and I hope fun to shoot). Some day...

Do you have a display case for some of your excellent classics Steve? Of course, it might make it difficult to be productive around the house if every time you walk by, you pause as your eye catches the blued steel and/or wood stock, surrender to the urge to pick it up to admire it closer, and then likely end up going and shooting a few rounds.

Based on your posts, you seem to have an excellent collection of some good examples from both Europe and here!

Wow!!!   That's one heck of a nice collection you've got going there Steve . . . very nice!  I couldn't help but notice the muzzle loader pistol with the nice wood grip behind the clock, from that angle it looks exactly like a Pennsylvania pistol I put together from a kit, I really kick myself in the butt over and over for selling that pistol because it turned out very pristine when I was done with it.  I think it was a CVA kit and they could be had very cheap back in those days but now days everything seems through the roof in price.

Most of those older Crosman's seem to have their front sights filed thin. Easy to see why when looking through those small peep sight holes. Mine is the same way.

They aren’t filed they are all stock.  Just made them thin back then. On the early ones they were’nt painted some have brass blades.  As usual the earlier the more time they took to do it right.

That's interesting. All this time I've been led to believe they were filed after the fact. This by a knowledgeable Crosman guy right here. Would you mind posting a closeup pic of your 101's sight. I would like to know if it is as crude as mine in the sense modeling marks are still present.

Here is a study in Crosman 101 sights from 1950 to 1927, youngest to oldest.  As you can see the older ones actually had blades set in.  The first pic is of the 1950? Kringle paint, it is the crudest, it never gets better just cheaper?

Those are excellent photos...thanks for posting.

Here's mine. I'm pretty sure it was filed down some. In any account makes zeroing with the small peep hole much easier.
