I'm sure most of you have seen the coverage on the News - here's some graphic Youtube videos, one from the Sheriffs Helicopter over the Coffey Park Subdivision as it was being incinerated in the early hours of Monday morning and then two days later from a Helo and Drones over the fire area showing the utter devastation.
Thankfully, my Brother and I live in the Town of Windsor about five miles Northwest of the locations shown and were spared - so far. The fires are mostly all still burning and winds are forecast to pick back up to 30-40 mph over the next 24 hours. Everyone is hoping/praying for Rain or for a long enough break in high winds so that the Firefighters can start to get containment but no rain is expected for the foreseeable future. Smoke is horrible to the point of being deemed hazardous to health with visibility getting down to less than 100 yards at times.

The Fleet Maintenance operation for the city of Santa Rosa is one of my customers. I may be off this week, but I think I'm gonna reach out to them and see how they're faring. It looks like Operation Dunkirk.

Just found this link to a zoomable Satellite Map showing the devastation caused by the Fires. The Red areas are Vegetation, not necessarily Burn areas. Zooming in on the areas East of Santa Rosa and Southeast of Napa, it's absolutely unbelievable how many homes were destroyed.

I am up in Redwood Valley about 70 miles north of Santa Rosa, all of the north end of Redwood Valley has been destroyed, all of the valley was evacuated from Monday 3am until mid-day today. We got by the road block and back to our house on foot Monday morning and stuck it out, our home was only 80 yards from the roadblock and we could see it from our home. We could see 1000 yards behind our home and a good view all around so we could see we were in no immediate danger, but the devastation 1/4 mile north of us is awful. I can not believe the total devastation of whole communities, this is going to take a long time for us to recover from. I pray for those people who lost their homes and especially for those who lost family members, Neil.
For those who might have something to say about us returning to our home we got permission from the Sergeant on duty, but he told us to be discrete as he did not want everyone trying to get back in.

Neil
Good to hear you and your family escaped the destruction that befell so many less fortunate. I was born in Healdsburg in 1960 and have lived in Sonoma County all my life. I worked as a Seasonal Firefighter for CDF as it was known back then from 1978 to 1984. I worked some big fires but nothing like this Perfect Storm of Fire we're currently experiencing. What we need right now is a big rain event to quench the flames and end the suffering.
Am fed up with the smoke here in Windsor and am heading to Lake Pillsbury with my Brother to hopefully get away from it and relax for a few days. I hope to put the hurt on the California Ground Squirrels with my SynRod while we're there.
Take care - David

Made it back last night from three days camping at Lake Pillsbury. Lake level is down to the point that the only way to launch a boat is off the bank with a 4wd vehicle. Didn't bring my camera so no pics but the Elk are healthy and the Fall tree colors are popping nicely on Hull Mtn. Exercised my .25 Marauder on the CGS's infesting Oak Flat Campground until the camp host drove thru and noticed my zeroing target on piece of cardboard. Managed to pop about 8 of the plague-carrying, flea-ridden nuisances anyway. Smoke from the Potter Valley fire was real bad Sunday and overnight - throat was burning and raw next day.
We drove in via Elk Mountain in Upper Lake and the road is actually in decent shape as they have been grading it every so often. Were told as we were leaving that the road in/out through Potter Valley had been repaired/reopened so we went out that way. It looks like it hasn't been graded all summer so washboard is pretty gnarly in spots. When we dropped down into Potter Valley, was expecting total devastation but it appears the fire burned the north end as the southern end was untouched.
