Title: Done something dumb....
Post by: Cliff H on January 19, 2019, 01:36:05 AM
Just dry fired my Hatsan Dominator .25 in my basement semi open basement.  Sounded like a 22 mag.  Afraid to cock and shoot it again.  I was just thinking what a beast this thing is.  Im wondering if i should just tear it down and see if anything is off.  Bare in mind I just received a type 4 Vortex Gas piston from HatsanUSA.  I just received this rifle from the 30% New Years deal.  And it was supposed to have been a Vortex Rifle, but they sent me a Spring carbine model.  I was really wanting a spring version but thought to go ahead and get the Vortex version cause its time for me to try one out and what better way to do that then to get one on closeout and get free shipping and 30% off.  $125, i think, to my door.  Long story short I emailed them asking for them to just ship me a Vortex kit that i could swap in to use after the warranty was up.  It showed up today.  I received two pieces in the shipment.  The gas piston and a new rear receiver block.  I suppose theres something is different between the spring and piston versions on the rear block
My thing is, i wanted to break in the rifle before i take it apart to really make it sing.

So put some pellets threw it and shoot it ... as is.
If somethings off, you will know it soon enough.

One dry fire shouldn't have hurt anything. Like Scott said, load her up and do some shooting and see what happens.

Put about 6-7 shots through it and it seems to be fine.  I havnt broke out the chrony yet but how posdible is it that the seal was damaged.  I kick myself for not recording the first 20 or so shots.

Measuring those first shots with the chrony would have been interesting but not necessary. At least you know your rifle shoots. Most likely that first loud dry fire was so loud because of lube igniting a bit and that's why chrony testing a shot wouldn't be meaningful albeit interesting. Only after cleaning up the rifle can you start to get meaningful chrony data. Indeed, the end block on the vortex dominator is shorter than that in the springer model. IMO, the springer with a .128 spring with 35 coils is about the same in power as a stock Type 3 vortex piston.

what they sent me was a type 4, is that the wrong size for this particular rifle

I'm not sure if a type 4 will work or not. My memory may be off but I'm pretty certain the Type 3 was made specifically for the Dominator. You can see what the type 3 piston looks like in my Dominator thread.

I will look it up, or email Hatsan about it.  Before I tear into it Im going to shoot it till the warrantee runs out.  On a side note, where do you get your springs from?  Ive been looking for a spring for my QB36 .22.  the spring I took out measured .117 thick, .75 od, .50 id, 42 coils.  Cant find anything on Vortex or Air rifle headquarters.  Sent an inquire about the size spring I'm trying to replace.  Will see when he gets back with me.

Thanks Steve, I can't keep that stuff straight.

Cliff, I got my springs from Vortek. What you need to do is select spring thickness as close as you can to the one you are replacing. It won't be exactly the same. That's why I bought 3 and tested them all. Something is going to to work good enough.

Got this email from Air rifle Headquarters.....http://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251488/4452198.htm (http://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251488/4452198.htm) .  he also replied "This will work and you can space it up to .600 of an inch for more power."

Does this mean to put bearing washers behind the spring over the rear guide?   This is also a unset spring.  Whats the difference between a set and unset spring.  Whats to gain from one over the other?

An unset spring will set itself over time.  It is a bit longer and has more preload.
A set spring has shrunk to it's normal length.  You can buy an unset spring, install it, cock your rifle for 3-8 hours and then shoot it.  This should set your spring.  Set springs are much easier to install.
Think of it as a seasoned cast iron skillet vs a brand new one. ;)

You can also set your spring by getting a piece of all thread rod from one of your local hardware stores that's just smaller than the inside diameter of your spring, put a nut and washer on one end, slide the spring on and then screw another washer and nut on the other end until it's compressed and let it sit that way for 4-8 hours. Will also help during install as you won't need quite as much pressure on the spring compressor to put the action back together.

Thanks guys,   I was under the impression that the ease of installation was all it was about but I wasn't for sure.
