My question . . . Is it the quality of the pellet, or is it the quality of the barrel that is the key factor ! ?

What are you shooting? Big 5 special or a quality gun? (Hw, AA?, German made Diana?) this isn’t meant to be offensive. PCPs tend to be less pellet picky as long as you stay within happy pellet speeds.

I'd say quality low powered springer, and years ago I shot lot's of springers, this one likes a light hold.

Neither individually, but both together. Ideally a uniform bore matched with properly sized pellets, free of defects should yield best results... once consistent velocities have been achieved and any/all harmonic issues have been resolved. If you ever hear those who enjoy springers say it's because of their simplicity... I'm convinced they're lying, Lol. Yes, they're simple in operation but that's where the simplicity ends and the rabbit hole begins...
