Beeman Sportsman 1000 Series Replacement Seal

Hello All,
This really is a fantastic site with a wealth of information and a bunch of just down right nice folks.
I recently tore into my Beeman Sportsman 1000 Series AG (SS1000?) to perform a lube tune. After cleaning a couple of pounds of shipping grease of off everything it became apparent that the seal was nicked up pretty good. Maybe I did it taking the piston out of the chamber or maybe it was done during manufacturing. Who's to say....... the chamber had many, many burrs. Anyway, not having a replacement seal I went ahead and completed my work (deburred, polished spring ends, black tar, heat shrink on spring guides, honed the cylinder, moly lube and many hours spent on the trigger) and put the rifle back together. The tune did indeed quiet and smooth things out a whole bunch but now I am hearing some piston slap. I don't want to shoot it much for fear of wrecking the spring.
Question:Does anyone know which replacement seal goes in this gun? After looking at the Compasseco video of the breakdown for the TF89, I have to believe that I have the same power plant in my AG. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Duber!
Welcome to the forum. I'm working on a Hammerli Titan, basically the same power plant, and ordered a small Apex, red, seal from Jim Maccari. It looks like it will work, but it's not as tall as the stock seal AND requires a different mount screw. The stock mount screw is stepped and too small in diameter. You'll need one with a larger dia. head that is somewhat cone shaped. Another forum member referenced to Target Tune India about tune kits. If you go there, look under spare parts and you'll find an adapter screw that may work. I've never ordered from them, so this is just info, not a recommendation. The screws are cheap, $2.99 ea. I might try a small order there to see how things go, but for now I'm just going to reinstall the stock seal. Well, thats just something to think about. I'm sure others will chime in and we'll get the real scoop.

Hey Duder!
Just got off the phone with customer service at Beeman air guns. They said they have a kit that comes with a breech seal, piston seal, and spring for $26.00. These are stock parts that just drop in. The phone number is, 714-890-4800. Pretty good price if you ask me. Keep us updated on your project.
Gettin some where. LADave

Dave,
Wow! You sir, are a steely eyed air gun man! Calling Beeman directly..... what a novel idea. I wish I wasn't such a dope and would have thought of that myself. I mean seeing as how I have a Beeman rifle and all..... That is some really good information! Thanks! And it does indeed sound like a pretty good price!
I checked out the Target Tune India site and saw the adapter screw that you mentioned. I think I've heard that called a dovetail adapter but I can't remember for sure. It's a neat idea and I like the thought of being able to use a JM press on Apex seal. I'm a little hesitant to order from overseas however. I'll think about it for a bit........
In order to pull my own weight a bit with this resource sharing, I investigated a couple of other avenues that I'd like to pass on to you. I know that the TF89 is made by Compasseco and Compasseco became Pyramyd Air back in September. So, I called PA and asked about parts for the Tech Force line of air guns. Sandra informed me that Compasseco is still handling parts. Back on the phone for a call to Compasseco in Bardstown, KY. I spoke with a woman by the name of Sharon. (I lived in KY for a while and I have to say: I sure miss that sweet KY accent) Sharon is sending me a piston seal for a TF89. $12.50 for the seal. It's probably a little high but I'll give it a try anyway.
I was also doing some general web searching and stumbled onto a thread from the old GTA forum. It talks about using a JM E9870 replacement spring in both the TF89 and the Beeman AR1000. Might be worth a try to get a better quality spring.
Here's a link to the discussion:
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/index.php?action=printpage;topic=24014.0
and a link to JM's spring:
http://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251488/6825218.htm
Between the information you've found and a couple of things I was able to add, I think we may have a handle this Dave. I'm going to pull the muzzle break off of my Beeman and check the crown and for sure I'll lap the breech while I wait for the new seal to arrive from KY. Let me know how you continue to make out. Thanks again for all of your help!

Hey Duber!
I don't know about steely eyed air gunman, more like four eyed newbie. I might get that kit from Beeman myself. I'll call and see if they'll let me bring in my Titan stuff to match up against the Beeman stuff. Thanks for the link on the AR1000 discussion, very informative. I don't have a lot of time so I bypass stuff that doesn't pertain to any of my rifles. Didn't get the Titan until August. I already have the JM E9870 spring and will try it out after I build a spacer.
You mentioned a piston slap problem. Not sure what that is or how it sounds. These are newbie thoughts so everyone chime in to make sure I'm thinking straight. Coming from an automotive background, if an engine block is bored out an oversized piston is used to take up the space of the metal that was removed. When air gunners hone out a cylinder, if a little metal is removed I guess a stock size piston seal is still OK. If more metal is removed, I guess we could go to an over size seal and maybe buttoning the rear of the piston so it doesn't rattle around as it travels down the cylinder. Please, someone with more experience chime in. I don't want Duber to break a spring because of my newbie ideas.
Tryin to figure it out. LADave

Hey Dave,
Listen, I'm a real newb at this myself. In fact the Beeman is my first air gun. I've had it about 3 years now but only got serious about shooting it 4 months ago or so. I tore it open for the first time 3 weeks ago. So I can't tell you that I know EXACTLY what piston slap is but I can take a swag at explaining my understanding of it:
When the trigger is squeezed and the sear releases, the spring drives the piston and seal up the chamber compressing the air that's in the cylinder. Duh right? Yeah I know.......So anyway - who's the dude that came up with the law - (I'll paraphrase) "an object in motion tends to stay in motion and an object at rest tends to stay at rest unless other forces are acted upon the object"? I think it was Newton..... not sure but that's my final answer. The pellet in the breech is our object that isn't looking to move anywhere none too fast cause he's at rest and want's to stay at rest. Also there is only the relatively small chamber hole for the air to escape from as the piston comes up. So we have a small hole and a pellet not wanting to get a move on and pressure builds up in the cylinder. Now I'm not sure but I think that groove in the top of the seal is there to allow the outer edge of the seal to "flair out" if you will under the increasing pressure and form a tight seal with the cylinder wall. That pressure forms an air cushion that keeps the seal/piston from hitting the top of the cylinder. If as in my case the seal is nicked up along the outer edge, the air seal is lost and we get blow by (I'll throw an engine term in there. I hope I used it correctly) past the seal/piston. This reduces the air cushion (and if I had a chrony I'm sure I would measure it as a reduction in my FPS numbers as well) and the spring forces the piston into the top of the cylinder. At this point I would have to assume that the piston probably bounces back down and slams the top of the spring. I don't know if the spring would still be extending or if it's already recoiling a bit but either way my pea brain is thinking that the spring has a natural vibration or resonance from it's release and then the piston slapping at it from the other direction causes a different vibration or resonance and this is what wreaks havoc on the spring. The "slap" itself sounds like a very sharp rap. It's towards the end of the spring travel and it's very quick. It sounds like metal on metal. I'm not 100% sure if it's the seal screw hitting the top of the chamber on the up stroke or is it the piston bouncing back down and hitting the top hat of the spring.
Again, I'm a total newb with all of this. I'm not a physicist or a mechanical engineer. Heck, I didn't even sleep in a Holiday Inn last night so I could be wrong in everything I've said. I hope someone with a whole bunch more experience jumps in and corrects my errors. I can assure you though, I won't be tearing up my spring. I'm not shooting the Beeman until after the new seal is installed. Beside, I have a new Benji Trail NP .22 that I'm having an absolute blast with right now.
