Picked up a Osprey Super Target .177. I like everything about the gun but I just can't get it to group consistently. Anyone have any recommendations on pellets? It's a little twangy but the weight of gun absorbs it. The trigger is light and predictable. Is there a recommended way to clean the barrel on tap loaders? Ive been shooting it with open sights but compared to my other non scoped guns it's all over the place. Hopefully I have time this weekend scope it this weekend and see if it makes a difference. Even if it doesnt shot well I still like it, it's like a overbuilt R7. The walnut stock is nice but I may refinish it since the finish it came with masks some of the wood and the grain wasn't filled. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated .

I'm not familiar with that particular rifle at all but it certainly is a very nice looking piece. I would suggest weed eater line for the cleaning. I use the heaviest that will easily go down the barrel. You can cut a length, sharpen one end, and melt a flat spot on the other end then push the sharp end through your patch and pull it through the barrel. A straw pushed into the muzzle end can help pass through any baffles or joints present. Some Goo Gone pulled through on patches followed by dry patches usually does well. Some people swear by JB non-embedding bore paste to polish a problem barrel and you should certainly check the crown for any dents or burs if the above doesn't improve your situation. Also check all screws to make sure you don't have any shifting going on. Hope this helps. Nice looking rifle.

I use weed eater line for some of my guns but this is a tap loader. Can't even put a light at the tap to see if the barrel is dirty. Im leaning towards a rod or felt pellets I guess you could take out the tap out but I've read there can be alignment issues.

I thought you would be able to feed the weed eater line into the loading port and down the barrel but I guess not in this case. I have cleaned guns from the muzzle when absolutely necessary but I really prefer not to do it with a rod and I've only used coated rods with great caution when doing so. You could make a guide to slip over the muzzle to try to minimize rod contact with muzzle rifling if the front sight allows. Good luck with it, it is a very nice looking rifle.

I was able to use qtips and a string to check the barrel and it was pretty clean. Tried more pellets earlier and it liked RWS Superdomes, so Ill need to buy some more of those. I have an unused tin of old Eley Wasps I'll try tomorrow. Still not great accuracy though, my 1st year Crosman 101 out shot it at 10 meters today. Definitely a fun gun though, I'll have to keep my eye out for a late model Tracker with the spring guide and smaller transfer port. I saw pics of some Trackers with walnt tyrolean stocks that were beautiful, shame not many made it over here.

With the tap open, you might try stuffing 2 or 3 felt cleaning pellets down the tap and the shooting it. Might be easier than trying to introduce something into the bore and pulling it thru.............

Ill dig around my garage, I have some old felt pellets somewhere. Barrel wasnt too bad but I'll try them out as well.
I was able shot today and was getting ragged groups with JSB Exacts at 15yrds. Tried a bunch of H&N pellets as well with varying results. Also shot my BSA Superstar .177 at 25yrds and was getting ragged 1 hole groups from a rest. The Superstar has a nice short shot cycle but after putting about 50 rounds thru it and going back to the Osprey, the Osprey almost feels recoiless. Ill scope it this weekend if I have time and hopefully I'll get better groups.

What a beautiful rifle! The Osprey Supertarget is a rare and rather valuable beast (which the nerd collector in me would urge you to consider before re-finishing..). Yours is the early version, which used a walnut rendition of the standard sporter stock; later examples used a heavier match-style stock.
With tap-loaders you have no choice but to clean from the muzzle, so whatever method you use needs to put protection of the crown as a high priority. On mine I usually push cleaning pellets through with a flexible line and then extract them from the tap.
The hole is the tap is tapered; bigger at the rear than at the front. I get the best results by using a pellet with a larger-diameter skirt, then pushing it gently to the bottom of the tap before closing it; the tap thus acts as its own built-in skirt sizer that way. The classic RWS designs (Hobby, Superdome, Meisterkugeln, Superpoint, Super Hollowpoint) have the biggest skirts of any .177 pellets I’m aware of.
I love tap-loaders! (My avatar is a classic Webley Mk 3...). Please call me when you get tired of it, LOL!

Thanks for the response, lot of good info. Ill try pushing the pellets to the bottom. I had been using 4.52 sized head pellets but your saying the larger skirt is more important? Im gonna hold off on the stock for now. Ill probably cave and do it later. A nice tung oil and turpentine finish with filled grain woll look nice. I got the orignsl box and receipt from Beeman. I think the receipt and inspection paperwork was from 1977. I didn't pay much more for it when it was bought.
I really like the sidelever tap loader set up on the Webley platform. I ended up buying a Barnett Spitfire which I like alot as well. Compared to my BSA Stutzen the Webely is much easier to cock and the Tracker/Spitfire is very light and pointable.

Great find! Nice rifle! I own 2 Osprey Supertargets, An Army version with Williams sight, (from the Webley museum when they went belleyup) and a normal one with Anschutz sight. Theyre both tuned for close range targetwork.
Theyre great shooters, allthough not as smooth as the competition, they do have great potential at their designed range of 10m.
I clean the bore from front end of the barrel, with tap open. I use a wool brush on the rod so not to damage the crown.
You can also remove the tap for cleaning but refitting the tap can be a pain in the @@@ and you can fit the tap the wrong way around on some models. The pellets should fall into the tap quite deep. If they dont fall but stay in the top of the tap, the tap is probably fitted the wrong way around. DONT try felt pellets! Taploader design isnt designed for those. It wont leave the tap. Besides, they dont cleanout anything anyway, they only get torn apart

Eiyk, those target stocks look really nice on them, definatly more of a 10m gun look. What's their favorite pellet and have you done anything internally? Any info will be appreciated, I like everything about the gun just can't get it to group consistently. Ive been putting off taking it apart and cleaning up the internals. I picked up a Norcia 92, another taploader/side lever, and I was able to shot it well with a variety of pellets right off the bat. The Norica feels cheap compared to the ST though.

Yes the targetstocks are great but the hunterstocks are much more rare (in supertarget trim).Mine are tuned for short range (6yrd) targetwork so 'everything'will group at that distance. But I use jsb exact and get 1-holers/ragged holes with those at that distance. I can hit the bell target with each shot on a good day.
As said, tap alignment is CRUCIAL on these rifles.
Without that youll get flyers and damage pellets.
Mine are tuned with non-original relatively long springs with thinner thread. Those give best shooting behaviour. (because of the pistons double-seal system. Also a springguide is included.
But it should function ok with original parts in good condition.
So check barrel for rust, check tap alignment with barrel and check whether the tap itself is fitted the correct way.
Some get better results with a pellet seater to push it into the tap but I dont bother and it shouldnt be necessary.
You may also want to check presence of partnr DP140. I regularly falls out of the stock on disassembly and is forgotten. Dunno whether it does anything for accuracy. I may as the barrel may touch the stock (differently).

I also had to loctite all screws, even from the front sight tunnel as they worked loose. Even with my tuned ospreys.

Ill check the tap alignment this weekend. Besides the original box I also got the original receipt from Beeman and inspection paper which was pretty cool.
