Title: Umarex octane vs octane elite
Post by: huskert on December 31, 2017, 03:59:08 AM
I have a np2 in .177 and I am wanting to get a break barrel .22. Apparently the newish octane elite hasn't been out there real long, but I am looking for some input if you have an octane elite or may have both versions. If you have the elite, are you happy with it as it comes from the factory? If you have both the elite and regular octane, is the elite the better rifle. Thanks for the input

Hi Tre,

I got a new Octane Elite a couple of months ago, I got it for rabbit control around home. I had read of people being happy with them out of the box, and others who were not.

Here is my own experience so far, just with this one Elite.
First thing, the trigger pull was way to hard. WAY too hard. Sore trigger finger after 20 shots hard.
I found and acquired a replacement component for part of the trigger group, installed that and it made a huge difference, now the trigger is fairly light, to me it's now a very good trigger for a magnum springer for rabbit shooting.

I have put about 300 pellets through it so far, tried 10 different pellet types to find what it likes (it seems fussy with pellets), and now I have confidence in chest shot kills on rabbits up to about 30 metres. Got 7 rabbits with it so far, farthest at 27 metres.

But it's not accurate enough to make head shots consistently, sometimes yes (got 2), sometimes miss.
On paper at 20 metres group sizes vary, sometimes tight, sometimes not so much. I will be looking for ways to improve this if I can (yes, the screws are tight).

So out of the box the trigger on my one wasn't satisfactory to me, and highly consistent accuracy isn't there for me yet either.
However, this Elite is certainly powerful, and with H&N Hunter Extreme 19.09gr is accurate enough and devastatingly effective on rabbits.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input. The online reviews by the air gun sources seem to really emphasize the accuracy of this rifle with the new stopshox system, but the real world reviews are pretty mixed. I'm still on the fence on these--may ust go with a Benjamin  in .22
