Finally got my C1
«

Without a doubt i've spent to much time lately thinking about my coming C1 carbine but after 25 years of waiting i had gotten impatient. As a kid i wanted one terribly bad but never did get one, when i saw this one online for $125.00, sight unseen, i bought it. The UPS guy just pulled out of the drive way a little while ago and i thought i'd share what i got.
This was an early model C1 with manual, 1982, San Raf. address. it has no safety and the serial number from webley is 800336. From what i read, the first Beeman imports began at 800000 so i guess this one was the 336th made for import. It is a fine gun, the metal work is simply flawless and the original blue is deep blue/black and mirror shined. The way hot blue used to be done.. Not a speck of rust anywhere. The stock has been refinished and only has a few small nicks. The buttplate shows more wear than anything else. This gun was much loved i think, the previous owner said it took many rabbits and a few crows, there is fresh moly paste on the hinge and on the spring and no metal shows any wear or contact. There are scratches from where a muzzlebreak was affixed and of course the sights are long gone.
The trigger is amazing, i guess work has been done on it because i've heard they were terrible. This one has no 1st or 2nd stage, no take up and no slack. You just put about 2lbs of pressure on it and it goes off! Probably slightly dangerous but i'll be careful with it.
Heres the downside. As stated by the previous owner, the barrel has a slight amount of side to side play within the mounting forks. This will have to be fixed. Also a tune is probably in order, i'll have to figure out the spring compressor this week and make this my first. Heres a pic, J

Congrats on the new C-1. Enjoy her, but don't forget to take a good hard look at that trigger. Someone has done something to her if the trigger is anything other than a crappy single stage.

Thanks guys for the comments,
No doubt about it Eric, it's a worked over trigger. I have not taken it apart yet but will figure out what they did to it once i do. I know EXACTLY what you mean Bart, i slobbered over the beemans but was lucky to get a 760 pumper. This is actually the first beeman import i've ever had, and must be one of the least expensive ever sold. For some reasons the C1's don't seem to sell for much.
I ran about 10 shots over a chrony and i got readings from 570-595 using the lightweight .177 hobby pellets. I'll assume this is way low, even considering the factory rating was a probably overstated 840fps. I'll start researching this project, it will take me awhile to get everything squared away/parts ordered but i look forward to shooting this little gun for a long time to come. This gun and patience go hand in hand. J

Congrats on the new gun! I'm sure you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it, both in the fixing it up, and in shooting it.
I also lived near the Beeman warehouse in Santa Rosa while in grade school and junior high. Every time I'd drive by there with my dad, I wanted to go in and look at all of the airguns, but I never dared ask, as we were always on the way someplace. I also knew the Beeman guns were waaaay more expensive than my own Pumpmaster and I'd never have a chance at getting one. I recently changed that now that I don't rely on my parents for spending money and 6 weeks ago got my own first Beeman, a nice used R9 in .20 cal. Unlike you, I think I "only" waited 23-24 years, hehe. They are great guns for sure, and well worth the wait!!
Let us know just how good you end up getting yours to shoot.

Hey, you gotta have a dream to shoot for. I think there were a lot of us as kids who dreamed of someday owning a nice NON-pumper that you just HAD to pump to the max every time so you'd always have full power, even if it wore you out. Once you upgrade to a nice springer, you've definitely hit the big leagues for airguns. Unfortunately, I don't still have my old pumpermaster though. The cocking link snapped on it and I wasn't able to repair it as a kid and had no idea where to get it fixed. I tore it apart though and looked at how everything worked...and then tossed it. If only I had kept it, I would be able to repair it now of course.
Glad you also realized your dream with the C-1. Now get that thing fixed up and go nuts!

Well step two already, the tune and shimming of the barrel.
By chance i was looking online and found a tuner named Rob Hawkins, has a place called "spring tunes" in Hickory N.C., just 20 minutes from me. He actually picked his phone up when i called and said by chance a customer with a C1 had ordered a full tune kit through him and never picked it up. He told me to drop the gun off tomorrow and he'd open it up free of charge, give me a total price and get it done this week if i wanted. He said he was also familiar with the loose barrel issue and had tiny shims to tighten it up. He seems like a great guy so i'll give him a try and hopefully have my gun back next week shooting like a new one. J

Just wanted to mention my experience with Rob Hawkins. Turns out he is a member of these forums, although i guess he doesn't post much. I drove to his house and was delighted to meet such a nice guy and to be able to spend an hour or so talking AG's with a guy who clearly loves airguns and the industry and people who are part of it. I've not met but a handful of airgunners in my life in person anyways, but darned if i don't like them all...
After looking at my gun and shooting it, he proclaimed it sick but cureable, then produced some amazing things, from a magic box in his workshop..from factory trigger parts to breech seals.. springs and even a factory piston seal. All for a C1. But then he ran over other options using a mix of maccari parts and factory.. that was just the tune, other issues involving the loose breech pins and cocking arm are going to be addressed as well. I look darned forward to seeing what he's put together on it, it will be just a short period of time before he has it done. i'm anxiously awaiting the call...
In the meantime i spoke with the original owner who surprised me by laughing when i ask him "what was done to the trigger?" He says.. " i shot it for 25 years"
yankees are funny
anyways, i guess the trigger is just very broken in. Also have a beeman muzzlebreak on it's way.. this gun is gonna look good.. but
The funny thing is that after mounting a 4x scope on it last night for a quick round of accuracy testing(inthe house, shooting a phone book, wifes at the beach
) i not only couldn't get it to group with any pellet i tried, but for the first time ever, i shot a hole through my house..
what do you want to bet that after i spend $500 on this old gun, i can't hit the broad side of a barn with it.. i will find the sheetrock though...

lol ok i'll toothpaste it just for the heck of it
and yes, not only will i not shoot it inside but i'm going to leave it somewheres else till its safe to bring home
plus i'm going to have to slowly acclimate the wife to it, if she see's it all at once shes gonna bust me "WHERE DID THAT YELLOW ONE COME FRoM???" What i should say is " THE SAME PLACE AS YOUR CAR PAYMENT" but instead i'll avoid that and let her see just a muzzlebreak,, then a bit of the stock.. if done slowly she'll not recognize it's not been here all along..

See, Bart knows! We want a before toothpaste picture and an after toothpaste picture! I would have tried it to cover the multiple bb holes in my bedroom wall, but my walls arent white.

Jeff congrats on getting your C-1. That bug bit me too a while back and I managed to find one on the classifieds that's about as old as yours with fairly normal milage for it's age. Yours will shoot a lot faster after the tune no doubt. Maybe 750fps or better with cp's.As for accuracy, be sure to give the barrel a good cleaning and give it time to break in after the tune. The good thing is some shooters who had a C-1 took care of them so your barrel may have high milage but is probably fine.Let's hope so.

Thanks Progun, the gun as shooting pretty bad as it turned out(see hole in wall pic) slinging pellets everywhere. I did clean the barrel w/ jb paste and what looked like a fairly clean barrel spit out an incredible amount of rusty looking patches. I got it clean and polished but may have to use a large diameter skirt size, we'll see when it comes back from Rob.
Speaking of Rob Hawkins, he emailed me today to tell me the old seal was indeed shot and that the gun had been built before. He mentioned the amount of time it would take to shim the barrel PERFECTLY so that it was in alignment with the scope mounts. He talked about the old piston and how well made it was, how smooth he got the compression tube and then listed 4 different springs he would try, to get the perfect combination of smoothness and power. He said delrin just wasn't going to take the longterm beating the guide was going to take and so he spoke of the one he would make on his lathe....
i got scared
in my mind i saw a final bill for about 40-50 labor hours plus materials.. um.. that will be $1100.00 ...
so i immediately contacted him and he just laughed.
"Jeff you know my price is 190.00 and thats exactly what you will owe me when i make your gun PERFECT" guys i just wanted to mention this as i was and am blown away by how much this man loves airguns and what a perfectionist he is in rebuilding them. I can't wait to get this gun, it will be awhile longer but i know he's building me something special. Will sure post as soon as i receive her. J
