Is the QB79 extinct?
MittensKitten:
I have been deliberating about where to turn for my next airgun fix. I had started a thread about finding a unicorn and ended up settling on the 880 as a good place to start with airguns. I've modded and shot them to the point where I'm getting antsy for a new gun... it's a sick cycle I guess.
I had heard about the QB guns a long time ago and knew they were popular, but didn't really understand why, until just recently while researching and coming across the legendary $200 ninja pcp thread.
I like to tinker and learn about guns and so I thought that converting a QB79 would be the perfect project. In searching for a QB79, I emailed ^&$@_=s and he told me that both the QB78 and 79 were out of stock for the foreseeable future because of the corona virus. Other threads I read suggested these guns are no longer manufactured. Can anyone shed light on these conflicting statements?
I spoke to the resident expert Geo and he told me that the QB78 can be turned into a more powerful rifle than the 79 because of the plenum size but there's more involved to modify the 78. I really like the streamlined appearance of the bottle on the QB79. The idea of a 90 degree fitting and cutting the stock of the QB78 isn't all the appealing to me. I have however found QB78's for sale on ebay and cannot find a QB79 anywhere. Can you make a slick looking pcp out of the QB78?
Is it worth messing with a 78 or 79 (if one exists) or is something like the gauntlet or nova liberty going to be close enough in price to skip all the work modding. On a side note, can you put a barrel band on the gauntlet without cutting the stock? I've read that the barrel moving is an issue. The Nova Liberty seems to get really good reviews.....stay focused....lol
Also, I have an old TAU 200 youth match rifle that I forgot was sitting in a closet. The CO2 tube no longer holds pressure. I imagine it can be rebuilt with new O rings. Could that gun be made into a PCP? I have too many questions. ;D
The big question : Is the QB79 extinct? :'(
Thanks for any help.
(Wow, I din't realize you couldn't even type the name of the business I contacted. I read some things about he who can't be named... I'll leave it alone.)
Roadworthy:
The QB 79 as well as the 78 do appear on the Airgun Depot website. They are marketed under the Beeman brand name.

You can do the same mods to a 78 as I did to the 79.... However, you will have to drill the end of the tube after you cut it off, in order to mount the tank block from a 79, which you will have to purchase separately.... The advantage of starting with the 78 is that you can end up with a larger plenum, which you can tailor to your build.... Whether that is a significant advantage depends on the FPE you plan to achieve.... You will have to modify the stock on the 78 to clear the bottle, of course....

MittensKitten:
The Beeman QB 79 on Airgun Depot is sold as a combo and says "coming soon". I see the 78 on a few different sites.
TroyHammer:
With the deals on the gauntlet hard not to go that route. I wouldn't worry about plenum size. The gauntlet/qb79 can produce a ton of power.
