CLOSE RANGE:
How to mess up a SURE shot the STUPID way 🤦🏻♂️
In the past, there were times when
▪ I missed because the quarry moved the moment I pulled the trigger.
▪ There were times I missed because the wind decided to swirl into a different direction just as my pellet was making its way to the quarry.
▪ And times when I missed because my Chinese valve, regulator, or other part did what Chinese gun parts often do.
Well, this is not one of those times.
🔹 I had a pigeon land really close to my well-conceiled position.
50 yards range
would have been fine.
12 yards
would have been fine.
But it was
only 4 yards
.... 😱
I raised my head slowly over my cover, left eye scanning for the quarry, right eye aiming through 3x magnification.
What a rush! (and rushed I was, as these pigeons don't stick around once they see a human this close).
THERE IT IS!! —— Crosshairs on it!! —— Squeeze the trigger, follow through!!
• • • • • • •
A loud sharp slap.
Not the expected deep thudd....
Fluttering of a scared pest bird. Fluttering
away
— not fluttering on the ground in a final death dance.... 🤷🏻♂️
STUPID!! 😡
(
me
, that is).
Missed a 4 (four) yard shot!
At such close range the trajectory of my JSB dome was over an inch lower than the crosshairs.
And on its way it hit an obstacle that — — in the scope view — didn't seem to be in the way of the trajectory. But that's what I hit.
And the pest bird lives to
poop another day.
🤷🏻♂️
• • • • • • •
There is plenty to learn for me...
🔹 MY SICKNESS 😱
I
welcome
50 yard shots. 5 yard shots
scare
me. I have missed those shots — so — many — times. 🤦🏻♂️
And one reason is that
hunting fever is real
. It's a sickness that shuts my brain off.
So, unless my brain
is trained through many practices where it will perform on auto-pilot
, I will continue to miss those extreme close range shots.
🔹 THE TREATMENT 😊
For my fever the doctor might prescribe the following treatment:
Maybe I need a shooting range at the bottom of a ravine, or some other location where I have backstops all around me.
I'll place numbered targets all around me at varying ranges, some far, but many at extreme close ranges.
And then, I need to shoot them in order, under time pressure.
Until my brain learns to perform on auto-pilot.
➔ Death to all pigeons, both NEAR and far! 💀
❓ What are your experiences with extreme close range shots on quarry?
Have a great day! (meaning, go kill something).
Matthias

I did the same thing on a chipmunk the other day. No obstacles in the way I just shot into the dirt and showered him good. It couldn't have been more than 5 yards and my P-Rod was sighted in at 25.

I'm not the Great White Hunter or anything but the only gopher I shot was with a open sighted Crosman 150 at about 6 yards. I was trying out the .22 slugs from the 218-25-RF mould and knew how they behaved to 12 -15 yards. Sitting on my chair, listening to an audiobook and keeping an eye on the freshly dug gopher hole. I let him/her pop its head out a couple of times, lined up the sights and as the head started inching out of the hole, I shot it. It had the good manners to drop back in the hole and effectively inter itself.

I had a similar experience with a raccoon that set off the ding donger several months ago. I went out to investigate, don't remember if I hit it with the initial shot or not at 25yds, I may have had an equipment failure as well. Anyway it took off across the yard and went up our mango tree. I started shining the light and found him about 15' off of the ground on a small branch. I tried sighting through the scope with flashlight in one hand. Fired the shot and hit the limb he was on. Second shot with the AEA HP carbine I simply sighted down the side of the barrel. Three yds at best, DRT. Took me back to my childhood and shooting sparrows with no front sight.

Been there many times. Learn from the mistakes, modify where needed and persevere so the pain of missing isn't wasted.

Close shots with a scoped rifle can be very troublesome. Can't (or don't want to) count the times I've shot under my intended target at very close range and feel like a goof for missing a shot so close
Often I (and possibly others) focus on being able to put lead on target from 20 yards to 60 yards(+) or whatever, yet forget to check the hold over at close range. Just a few days ago I was out tending to some pests and had a chipmunk come around, it got within two feet of me and hadn't taken notice I was there or didn't care. If I had my Crosman 1377 with me I may have had a shot, but as soon as I started to swing the Cayden around, it took off. I thought to myself, probably would have missed anyways
I prefer open sights for when I plan on taking most of my shots under 20 yards. I find opens much quicker to get on target when the ranges are short, but a scoped rifle has the advantage when the range is stretched. When possible, I take multiple rifles or possibly a rifle and multipump pistol, mostly during pesting outings to suite various scenarios. While hunting, most want to pack light and this may not be an option, in which it's best to learn the hold over/under near and far.
But yes, you're not the only one to miss a close target
Come to think about it, I have yet to shoot my Cayden under 25yards... And this year has been my primary airgun

I wonder if see thru scope rings would be better on close up shots?

Matthias, my range is only 20yds and my lawn gets occasional dandelions at closer ranges so I learned that POI is quite a bit lower on my reticle than I think it should be....otherwise I'd miss those close quarter shots too!

Too bad on the too close flying rat. Those types of surprise close range opportunities can and will humble even the best of us at some point, so don't feel too badly about it.
For shots where I know that the target is too close I don't even think to use the optics anymore, I just look down the side or top of the barrel and average it. So far so good.
Best of luck next time.
