Protecting the black finish on brass pumpers?

i Hi all,
I shoot my vintage pumpers a lot and I can see I'm beginning to wear the finish where I hold them to pump. Is there any sort of tape or covering you guys use to protect them? I'm also curious if gun oil is good for them, or if there is something better since they are not blued steel.
I tried some fabric tape where my hand goes but it slides around a little and I wonder if the fabric moving against the metal will actually wear it more than just my hand sweat. I love shooting them and bought them to use, but I'd like to preserve them as much as possible.
Thanks for any advice!

Dan, try to find one of black plastic barrel guards. They’re few & far between though.

They might sound like a lot of work till you realize you only need 3-4 pumps for plinking.

The hand guards help, but will eventually create a wear spot.
What I do for a gun without it is a slig piece of rubber fuel hose.
Beyond that they are going to wear and I have just learned to live with it, but none of my guns are exactly show queens.

I like David's fuel line hose idea.
I also use a section of it in various diameters to protect my fill probes when not it use.
I can write the name of the gun they go to on them with a Sharpie.
