Title: East Texas
Post by: HCAirgunner on September 18, 2013, 10:24:27 AM
I'm looking for people in East Texas who want to start an "airgun club;" nothing too formal, just good folks getting together and shooting good airguns, telling good stories, and having a generally good time :D

I am in the Longview, Texas area. I want to keep the drive down to a minimum, so I am looking for folks within a 25 mile radius of Longview.

I will bump this thread occasionally to keep it active.

I share your interest but Rusk is some 70-80 miles to the southwest of Longview and with diesel at $4/gallon, well you know.... ::)

How 'bout it, Chris?  Have you heard from anyone else in the Pineywoods?

Unfortunately, no. It looks like, for now, I am a one-man show.

I would have thought there'd be more airgunners here; every other month, there is a gun show in either Marshall, Longview, Shreveport, or Center.

Of course, at the gun range I shoot at, I am an oddity; most people are there to shoot firearms. However, more than 1 person has expressed an interest in the Hatsan (the one I shoot the most.)

However, the gunsmith at the range I shoot at, who goes by "Bennie," is from South Africa, and is a former amateur competitor in air rifle; he favors the FWBs. He thinks that what I am doing is great, and he loves working on airguns. However, he is heavily into selling AR-15 "bug-out kits," and that takes up the majority of his time.

But I will keep looking, and waiting. Gotta be another East Texas airgunner somewhere! :)

I'm in Shreveport. A little farther away than you wanted. My son and I are the only ones that I know of around here that shoot air rifles.

Hunt county checking in!
As I already posted in the DFW thread, I'm all for an informal air gun club and I'm on acreage.

Yeah, I am beginning to see that "East Texas" is a larger area than I first imagined! Ha ha ha!

Hunt County is still a bit remote for me.

Even Tyler is a bit more than I wanted to drive. (38 miles distant.)

But thanks, guys, for responding. I hope you all find ways to form clubs in your areas! And I wish you all the best!

I looked into the Kermit Air Gun group.  Forget that, Kermit is nearly 600 miles from Rusk although it's still in Texas.   :o

Hi, I live in Pittsburg, Tx, between a little north Of Tyler and Longview.  I'm back to a springer (for starters) after many years away for airgunning.  I'd love to get together for some shootin' and sharing.  Please let us know if, when, and how something gets started...
Title: Re: East Texas
Post by: HCAirgunner on May 05, 2014, 12:26:42 PM
Ok, in the past I have said that I was in the "Longview Area," simply for privacy reasons. But I have thought it over, and have decided to post my actual city (Marshall) on my profile.

(It's not about not trusting you guys... there are a lot of "lurkers" who read the boards without ever becoming a member.)

But I have come to the decision that there comes a point where caution becomes paranoia. How am I ever going to find people to shoot with if I don't disclose my actual location? LOL :D

Basically, I want to stay within a 40-mile radius of Marshall. I'll drive to Gladewater (West), Henderson (South), Linden (North) and I'll drive to Shreveport (East). Anything further is getting a bit far. (At least on a regular basis... I'd be willing to drive further for a "once a year" event, if such an event could be organized / receive enough interest.)

So to the guy from Shreveport above who responded, why not send me a PM? :)

P.S. OleTomCat: It seems (from a Google search) that the only place in Henderson that someone could shoot would be Kat Kreek Hunting Club & Sporting Clays. Do you know anything about that club? Are they shotguns only? Or do you think they'd allow airguns? Let me know.

I'm in Henderson and would be interrested in being part of a group.  Like others, fuel is high but a "monthly" get together would be nice.  There seems to be some interrest yet begs the question..... where we gonna shoot?  You can forget Kat Creek by the way.
Title: Re: East Texas
Post by: HCAirgunner on July 15, 2014, 01:37:42 PM
Is Kat Creek shotguns only? Or out of business? Or bad customer service? Etc.? [Just Curious.]

Is there any other range in or near Henderson? I know a lot of ranges are not even listed on the internet, that's why I'm asking you. :D

Thanks.

I wish I would have known about this forum three months ago when I lived in Longview. I'm in Rusk now so I'm outside your intended AO. I see there is another Rusk dweller here though.

Once upon a time, not too long ago, there was a small group of guys who got together to shoot air rifles on Sunday afternoons.  When we get back to Rusk, in October, I'll see if this group has any continued interest in air guns and if that range is still available.

I'm still in Rusk, my Condor is about as powerful as it's going to get on co2 at 26fpe. I have a couple of airforce hpa tanks (490cc), but I'm waiting on my dedicated crossfill tank for hpa(it's only 72cu inches, but its a start). I found a dive shop in Tyler that will do 3000psi fills, and I'm excited to finally test this thing on hpa!

The dive shop in Lufkin will fill to 4,500 PSI. Very nice guy understands air gunners.
The dive shop in Nacogdoches has told me he will also fill to 4,500 PSI but I have not gotten around to using him yet.
Might be closer for you than Tyler....

With all due respect, I try to maintain a smaller than average footprint online. I appreciate the sound advice and perhaps in the future I may consider using the map feature, but where I live is a small town... takes about five minutes to drive from one side to the other. As with all small towns, I probably went to school with some of the good folks on these forums and I think a casual reach out in this thread is enough to make contact and plan a meet. Just the same, thank you for the advice.

Well I'm with you on that, there is not a lot that is considered an appropriate pest animal for my .357 condor. Now it's modded and shooting heavy and hot again. That's okay, it's ready to be a hog hammer, or a deer harvester once Texas wakes up and modifies it's antiquated airgun laws for hunting.

I'd love to meetup for airgun shooting and talk. I don't really have any limitations driving within a 2 hour radius, When I lived in England many of the shoots were 3-5 hours away.  My local shooting club was over one hour away, these are the sacrifices we make for our sport.

If there is still interest in meeting up to shoot, PM me...

Wow, how time flies.

I got busy doin' stuff, and kinda dropped off the forums (here, and elsewhere) altogether. But now, I'm back, and I'd like to renew my sentiment about wanting to get together and shoot sometime.

If I know far enough in advance, I can drive longer distances to events which are once or twice a year; if it's a weekly or bi-weekly thing, it will have to be shorter distance.

So, out of all the people who have responded to this thread, who's still around?

Greetings from Marshall, Texas.

We have several who have expressed interest in a shooting get together; however, there appears to be no common ground; i.e. everyone is a half day's ride from each other.  Gasoline is creeping back to $2.50/gal and no one seems to know a common shooting range.  What to do, what to do..... :-\

The meetings and range will be on 271 about 2 miles north of the loop at the Boars Nest.
Big blue building on east side of the road.
I have been working on the range for the last few days it's nothing fancy right now but it can turn out to be a really nice range, there is power and lighting on both sides so it's possible to have target cameras.
There are portacool units on site so they can be used on hot days, and the benches are under good shade. At this time the range is maxed at 75 yards because of available shade and also moving out to 100 would make it so people was shooting through part of a pathway to the other sections of the property..
I have 8 acres of property that is high fenced and another outside the fence that FT lanes could be cut and setup

I love Texas but not in August; furthermore, I'm a springer guy.  Are springers welcome?

A little late to this meet-up but how's the range coming? It's a bit of a hike for me to get to Tyler but I could probably make it out one of these times.

I'm not gittin' any younger but I'm still open.

Does it seem that East Texas air gunners are a somewhat private lot?  I did notice a recent post from an air gunner in Lufkin?  I wonder if that person would be interested?

Many years {26} ago, I went to a Sporting Clay shoot just south of Lufkin, the most unfriendly and disinterested people I'd expect to see in Texas; kinda' like, yankees you might find in NY, IL, MN, WI, NJ, etc.

I agree with you on the sporting clays people ,went to one 10 years ago ,if you didn't have a 2000 dollar gun they shunned you like you had the corona 19 , my buddy outshot most of tjem with his 15yr old mossberg 500, they were mad as heck.

I used to live in Wisconsin and the local shooting range was rifle, pistol, skeet. And sporting clays. It was the first time I had seen a range with a pub on the premises. That served alcohol.

The skeet people were pretty nice, but the sporting clay crowd was snooty.
Unfortunately like some Airgunners (cough, cough, FX crowd)

Never disparage anyone over their choice in women, cars, motorcycles, and guns.

They had a clay event I worked, the winner was a man In his late 50’s, Dressed in overalls, with a t shirt that holes in it, His shotgun was a Winchester model 12, with not much bluing left.

It was his only shot gun and he had owned it since he was a teenager.

Beware the man with only 1 gun, he probably knows how to use it well..

Anybody show up?  What became of this?  If it's alive and well, we could come up for an afternoon of meeting and shooting - before it gets too hot and humid.  Anybody....?
