It's been slow on squirrels around my place. I think it's a combination of the weather and reduced numbers from my sniping. I saw one on the bird feeder yesterday afternoon but she ran off when I opened the window. Then just before dark we had a repeat of that. Just before noon, she hessitated. I hit her a little further back than I intended and she moved about 3 steps before collapsing and falling from the side of the tree. I don't remember that happening before with a hit from one of my 25s although one with my Avenger needed a second shot so maybe it moved a little too. I think it was in part at least the fact that it was more at the diaphram than through the lungs. You can see my little hounds head in the first picture. She went her normal crazy to get outside and get to it but didn't try to take it anywhere. The black spot in the first picture is an area of rot in the base of this oak tree. I'll probably have to have it taken down but it isn't dropping limbs or anything so I'm just watching it.

Jim, another excellent shot with your P35! Some critters are toughdr than others, some make a slight movement but sure looks like a great shot placement. Cute pup and nice photos. And, I do think your spot on sniping skills has definitely culled your nutter population.

Jim, that is fine shooting because it had the desired result - a dead squirrel. And about being fewer squirrels, that is correct. I saw breeding activities lately - so there should be more squirrels soon. But right now, I am hunting much slower and finding most squirrels on the ground feeding.
Both of the squirrels I shot yesterday were dead when I got to them. One jumped and fell dead behind a tree. The other ran a couple yards after a chest shot. Both are normal for the types of hit they received.
Unless you have a setup like the guy on "The Airgun Show" and can hit the squirrels in the head EVERY TIME, then you will experience differing results maybe each time.

Thanks Mike and Dave.
I don't feel moving 3 steps is a big deal but the other 7 with the 25 caliber P35 pretty much folded at the impact. The one that got another pellet from my 25 Avenger was hit in the near shoulder and exited in front of the opposite side rear leg. The squirrel wasn't running off but wasn't dead yet either. So I shot it again in the same shoulder but that shot angled forward and out the neck. I've shot more with my little Prod with great results since it's retune but my impression is they tend to take a step or two more when hit from a relatively low powered 22 than they do when hit from a higher power 25. But both my Prod and P35 work great on squirrels but I think the P35 tends to drop them a little bit quicker. In other words, I think bigger holes kill a little bit quicker.

Good shooting Jim! I 've noticed less squirrels this Fall/winter too. I have only spotted 2, and they only come to the feeder once or twice a week, and I 've been giving them a pass because it's the same 2 squirrels. Not sure what's going on, but I read an article a few months ago that there is a disease among the squirrel population that could be contributing to the low numbers. Plus the changes in weather could be messing them up.
BTW, my Prod at mid-power (14.2 fpe) takes them out instantly because I only go for head shots when I use airguns with less than 17 or 18 fpe. I 'd rather take out the brain which is a sure kill than risk the squirrel running and expiring beyond my property from a vitals shot. That's not to say this can happen with a .25, but it's very possible and does happen with a .117 or .22. All the squirrels I 've shot in the chest/vitals with my .25 's did not go anywhere.

Harry, my Prod also worked great on head shots with it's original tune but I had a couple run off after what I think were solid vitals hits. So I retuned it to a little over 700 fps with the H&N FTT copper plated it likes. About 17 fpe. I tested penetration on dead squirrels before and after the retune and it shoots through with the retune now for straight side shots and would only do that before the retune with really heavy pellets I do not use with it. With the redesign they have dropped consistently with body shots. All the hits have been to the front half of the body, however. I agree with your conclusion that the stock Prod works better with head shots. I thought it was a little weak for body shots. It was my only PCP at the time so I retuned it. I still get about 30 shots per fill so shot count is not bad for a Prod. I did a Bstaley, put in a heavier hammer spring, and drilled out the transfer port.

I'm leaning more towards the "some are just harder to kill" theory because of a recent Dove experience. I hit it with my 25 caliber P35 in the upper chest. Feathers flew but it started walking away. So it got another, in about the same spot. More feathers but it still walked a few more steps. It then went down but it's head was still up and I had already loaded another pellet so it got a third. I'm pretty sure the last one was not necessary but still, two 25 caliber pellets through the chest to kill a dove? I cleaned it, I know where I hit it. The upper chest was throughly shot up (could say pulverized).
I've always believed some are tougher than others but I also think where you hit it makes a difference. But this experience pushes me more into the harder to kill camp. One pellet, 22 or 25, should be plenty for a dove if placed in the vitals. And I think it is. But some may still move some even though they are effectively dead.

It’s normal for a lung hit to take a few seconds to drop them, even from a .25. The heart and brain are still working, so unless you spine then too…
They get hit, Fight or Flight kicks in and really helps them, then they drown. The drowning part must be pretty quick, with a .25…
It doesn’t look too far back. If it was, she’d have run off and died somewhere else. Don’t overthink it.

I'm not worried about the squirrel I took that started the thread, she is dead. But I will try to put the pellet a little further forward next time. I don't think it was a bad shot but it was getting close to too far back, I think.
I find the different reaction to being shot interesting, however. Some of that seems to be the animal, not the shot. I took most of the top of the skull off another dove, for instance. It dropped immediately and I took it to the kitchen to dress it. It moved a bit, however, and seemed to be breathing. I probably should have just snipped off it's head but I took it back outside and put another one in it's neck. I don't know if it was feeling anything but I wanted to end any suffering quickly. But still alive without most of it's brain? To me just another example that animals reaction to the shot differs.
