Rabbits and the Wingshot

Got out of work early today. Just got a couple inches of new snow and the wind settled down. Decided to take the Wingshot for a walk outback. My sister had a bunch of large trees get blown over this summer. So I cut them up and hauled them home. Made several brush piles for the rabbits to hide in. Got to the first pile and 3 bunnies ran out the backside and across the creek. So I picked one track and took off after him. Too bad, he want in a hole. So I went back and took the second track. I seen the little bugger sneaking through some raspberries bushes and I snuck around the other side. He came out about 10 yards from the bridge and I smoked him. I forgot about the third one as I walked the creek bank. I jumped another one on the edge of the cut corn field. He ran across the lane in front of me at about 15 yards. I shot and he rolled. Found him about 30 yards away, just short of the rock pile. He would have been lost. It was starting to get dark and the wife would have dinner ready soon. So on my way back up to the house, I jumped 2 more along the RR tracks that butt up to my back line. One of them stopped about 25 yards and sat up. A little further than I like to take a shot with the light shooting Wingshot. But it was just such a nice picture. Like he was daring me to shoot. He dropped right there and didn’t twitch. I got them cleaned and was about to put them in the freezer. But decided to fry them up this weekend when a couple buddies come over. Maybe we will get a couple more. We usually use .22 handguns. Not as much sport using a shotgun. I don’t consider the Wingshot to be much of a shotgun. But it sure is fun hunting with it.

I need to get out after some rabbits at work with mine, too loud for the burbs LOL. What size shot you using for bunnies, I have some #4 I was planning on using , also some copper coated 5 shot that I haven't tested yet.
Have only shot pest birds with mine so far but it does the job. Sure is fun too

I have a bunch of empty capsules that I loaded up. Testing #4, 5, 6 and 8 shot. For birds, the 8 shot works good. Fuller pattern and it has enough power. I tried the #4 thinking it might be heavy enough for turkey. But I couldn’t fit enough pellets in a capsul to make any kind of a pattern. Plus, the gun just doesn’t have enough power. The #5s were good. But again, just not enough of a pattern. The #6 shot gives me a good pattern but is a bit lite for bunnies. So I mix the #5 and #6 shot. It gives me the best pattern and heaviest load I can fit in the capsule. Up North Airgunner had a nice write-up using sabots and Teflon tape to make bigger capsules that hold more shot. He was using tungsten for shot. But I can’t justify the cost.

I have JSB empty pellet tins filled with different size shot. In each tin I also have a count of how many pellets of that tins size will fit in a capsule. If you make your own filled capsule. Don’t buy bags of shot. It’s outrageous. Just buy cheep shotgun shells of the size you want to try. Cut them open and collect the shot. Better yet, borrow one from a friend if you don’t have some at home. One 12 gauge shell will make a few capsules full.

I got 3 more this morning. My buddy got a new Judge for Christmas. He got 2 using shot shells and we both missed a few others. Started out at daylight and didn’t see a thing till 10:00. The sun got a little higher and it warmed up from -2 to 19*. Wished we would have waited to start hunting a little later. The wind and new snow didn’t bother me. But walking for 2 hours before the first bunny tired me out.
