Spring compressor ABSOLUTELY needed for Trail NP non xl?

I'm wondering if one is absolutely needed for Trail NP non xl? I've done it without one for my Canadian version that has a long piston, fully cocked at about 90 degrees only. I don't know if it has a weaker gas strut too though, along with the longer piston. I don't have the money or resources to build one. Has anyone done it without? Thanks

The short answer is no you do not. But, check this out.
http://www.harborfreight.com/2-piece-3-4-quarter-inch-heavy-duty-cast-iron-pipe-clamp-31255.html
Add another couple of bucks for the 24" piece of pipe and you've saved your fingers at the least.
My Titan has only a few MM preload and that is only a dozen or so #s. What makes it so hard is I only have two hands and my wife isn't really that interested in helping since I make pouty faces at her when she asks me to stir something on the stove.
I have one of the above linked setups that I clamp in the vise to hold the compression tube while I remove the pin/reassemble. Another problem is the three hands it takes to hold the trigger parts up when feeding the assmy in to the tube while compressing the piston.
Doable, not advisable

Indeed Furniture LONG bar clamps make great AG spring compressors.
Positive locking screw types are BEST
... the squeeze clamp types simply do NOT have enough strength
