Pellets During Shot String?

Question: When running shot strings for tuning, how important is it to use the same pellets that you plan to shoot? Can you use cheaper pellets like CPHP’s for the testing and then use JSB 18.13’s for the regular pellets?

Stephen,
You could do gross tuning with available pellets, then fine tuning with the precision pellets you plan to shoot later.
If you are fine tuning for group size, then using your preferred pellet is essential. If you are gross tuning for general power level, then any pellet that has about the same weight would suffice.
The way different pellets fit in the barrel could also have an effect on velocity, energy, group size and group placement.

“Rough tuning”...I’ll use the cheap stuff...pellets that have made decently uniform velocity in the past, just haven’t grouped well.
Once I get it where the numbers tell me is “good” ...pretty much HAVE to test the pellets that have have been shown to group well.
Do get surprises..but generally it works out to save the good stuff.
(it’s like that bottle of 18year old scotch you bring out when for folks that can tell the difference...and the cheaper stuff you leave out for your bother-in-law. Just not going to “waste” it when he can’t tell the difference.)

I always use the same pellets tuning I want to shoot hunting, competition etc... just to many variables to deal with when it comes to accuracy.
