Spend a couple weeks working in a machine shop and you'll understand where the attitude comes from. You also have to consider what type of machines are available and the best way to make the parts with that equipment. Machinists are wizards and the machines aren't magic.
I dont know if it is my luck or not but has anybody come across machinists who have serious attitude and want to try and design and figure their own way of doing the simplest things like cutting a poppet ?I have a guy who insists on doing a cad design and print out for every thing no matter how simple.I also asked him to cut a notch to fit an oring and he insists the notch has to be certain width to his standards yet I show him an existing one and he doesnt want to do it that size.real headache
I only deal with myself.............and we don't always get along...
As a mid level old school machinist for the past 40+ years one of the constants of doing single job machining is the lack of the customers realizing a simple part many times takes several operations and set ups to actually make. Sometimes if a modification or tweak on an existing part is the most difficult which takes time to fixture and tool up for. Time is $$$ in the world of machining, the machines and specialty tooling is not cheap either. So for those who view machinists to be grumpy with attitude ... It is justified pretty much being what appears simple to the unknowing is many times far more involved than face appearances.Ah come on .... only need a o-ring groove cut here !!! 45 min to fixture and get set up correctly, 2 min to actually do the machine work. From the machinists perspective 1 hour at shop rate ... 60-100 $$ + an hour at most shops that take walk in one off's. Or .... as one of life's skill sets learn basic machining, buy some entry level machines & tooling to play and fabricate.Machining skills is one of those SKILLS that very much in todays world is a specialty and becoming a lost skill in a world of automation and computers.

Ole grumpy mechanic/machinist here as well that is anal about their work and live by the rule of "if you don't have the time to do it right the first time where will you find the time to do it right the second time when it's for free" You cannot add material back once it's took off. When I do side work at home, I charge by my time involved in doing the job not by what any commercial shop/dealer charges and I have more work than I need due to local repair shops not doing jobs right the first time. Pride in one's trade is fading out of existence in today's world. BD
That’s what it sounds like. You need to make friends with a hobbyist machinist. Maybe then things can be as simple as they are. It doesn’t take a computer to cut an oring groove. Dave
