Hi, everyone. I guess I'll call myself a "returning airgunner", here in my adopted home in Northern California.
My background in airguns: I grew up in Indiana, in an extended family that was into shooting, hunting, and fishing. I never got much into that stuff as a kid, but we were given BB guns, and I loved tearing up pop cans and shooting wormy apples off the tree. In the '80s, my grandfather took a trip to England and came back with the kinds of air guns that Beeman was just starting to import. He later bought some others through Beeman, and my dad ended up with (I think) an HW 77 as a gift from grandpa. My brother and I were only allowed to shoot it when Dad was around. As a teenager, I used to pore over the Beeman catalogs my grandpa lent to me. I remember thinking for the longest time how it all seemed terribly out of reach, price-wise, and how exotic and cool these pre-charged pneumatics seemed.
Other than a crude Chinese break barrel pistol which I've only shot a few times, that was it for airguns from college until recently.
Already into backpacking and bikepacking, I wanted to get into fishing and hunting as an adult starting maybe 6 or 7 years ago. Fishing has been easy, but breaking into hunting has not, and the ammo and gun shortages have only made that worse. After standing in line
again
recently to try to maybe buy my two boxes of shotgun ammo (having to split my two boxes between trap-club-friendly lead rounds and California-legal steel rounds) it occurred to me that I could get a lot of trigger time (and hunt a fair bit of small game) with an airgun, and I can order everything through the mail.
I was shocked that such an impressive gun (Umarex Origin) and scope were available so cheap, and threw a pile of different .22 pellets in the cart to test it with. That gun is on its way to me, and recently I found out there's a public airgun range not too far from here, too.
I'm interested in hunting whatever small game I can with my new air rifle, once I feel confident with it. Shortly, that'll mean Valley Quail, cottontails, and maybe jacks and squirrels. I fear I might have bought way too much gun for quail.
As I googled for info on quail hunting with an airgun and other airgun-related topics, the posts on this forum kept rising to the top. The quality of the conversation seemed great. Maybe I just got lucky, but the discourse was always really on-topic, knowledgeable and respectful.
So here I am. I'm sure I'll have questions about getting my Origin set up and zeroed, and ammo suggestions. It'll be nice to have somewhere to share my progress getting the gun set up and working to find hunting success. And at some point I might be interested in meeting up with others nearby or finding field target competitions.
