XS28 Magnum vs XS25 Midpower Accuracy: The magnum is better?

Most reviews I've read on the xs28 praise its accuracy.
I have read quite a few reviews about poor accuracy with the xs25, though.
I imagine the midpower xs25 outsells the magnum xs28 by 20 to 1, so there are a lot more people to please.
Plus, the xs25 is a first springer for many people, too, so the reviews are often not as educated as magnum springer reviews.
But even accounting for all that, I get the impression that the xs28 is just a better built air rifle.
I have both, but my xs25 is a 490 fps, so although I am more accurate with the XS28 now, I am not ready to call it until I get a full power spring in the xs25 and see what it can really do.

Maybe talk to LtDan. You didn't say what caliber yours is, but he now owns the full tune XS25 .22 I got from Mike at Flying Dragon and put it through the ringer tweaking and pellet testing and can give you an idea of what it should be capable of. Being a clone of the Diana D34, springs for those will fit the XS25 or ask Mike if he has one...probably does...lol.

Generally a more powerful spring will have a negative effect on accuracy due to the added recoil. Your velocity does sound a bit low, though, so your spring could be defective. The fit of the piston seal will also affect accuracy as well as pellet choice, barrel, scope, etc. There are a LOT of variables to accuracy.

Thanks for the info.
Do you and Lt. Dan think it is an accurate springer?
Also, I didn't think to ask Mr. Melick if he's noticed a difference over the years, that's a dang idea! (It's so obvious now, I correctly feel dumb, ha ha.)
RW, I got way ahead of myself. I should have mentioned that my xs25 is one of Mike Melick's "$60 tyd xs25w Canada": it is a nice 490fps Canada spec wood stock xs25.
Compression and mechanics are good, but the Canada legal spring is so weak that the shot cycle takes all day!
I think that is why I end up pulling about every 3rd shot: because it takes more follow through technique than I possess to hold it steady that long.
I hope the full power version is easier to shoot.
I plan to put a full power spring in it as my tuning skils get better.
BTW, Mr. Melick charges $60 tyd for the 490fps, $80 tyd with a full power spring , and $100 tyd for full power plus trigger mod.
It's got to be the best springer deal on the planet.

Mike's 2nd screw trigger mod is one of the best things you could have had him do to your rifle actually. I did and it was accurate with a couple pellets but I never touched the trigger adjustment and left it the way Mike set it when he did the setup. I remember Dan saying it shot well to start and even better for him once he got the trigger adjusted the way he likes his.

This is a very interesting topic. I happen to own a Ruger Air Magnum (XS28), a BlackHawk (XS25) and a 490 fps (Canadian) Umarex forge (close enough to a XS25, but with a very soft gas ram). All are in .177. I'm not the best shot, but the Ruger Air Magnum (XS28) and the BlackHawk (XS25) are very accurate for me. The 490 fps Forge I struggle with.
At full power the R.A.M./XS28 needs heavier pellets (10gr.+) to stay subsonic, which are generally of higher quality (in .177). Also the skirts flair out a lot more when fired, giving more rifling engagement in .177 and very possibly in .22. These two factors may aid in higher accuracy. At full power these guns are a handful until one gets use to them. When tuned/detuned you can still make good power with a nice shot cycle, even with a softer spring.
With the BlackHawk/XS25 I have had great luck with cheap Crosman hollow points, as well as a few other pellets from H&N. When it comes to heavy pellets (10gr. +) accuracy doesn't improve any, so I generally stick with CPHP's.
I can't say one is more accurate than the other, but as said before most new airgun buyer's go for an XS25/ BlackHawk (or D34) and may have issues learning to shoot springers. That may have a lot to do with various accuracy claims. Both the XS25 and XS28 are of very similar in build, just the XS28 has a longer reciever/compression tube (Think XS25- Long). Of course, aside from piston seal (and MAYBE piston and trigger?) I don't think any parts interchange. If I had to chose one it would be a XS25 in .177 or an XS28 in .22, depending on what caliber is wanted. Though this isn't set in stone, most of my airguns are in .177
In 98% of my airgun needs, a 8-12 fpe .177 is all I really need. The other 2%, a 21+fpe .22 should handle. The rest is just... wants.
Take care.

Ive had both the 25 and the 28. Question about the Canadian version. Is it just a lesser powered spring, or has the transfer port been enlarged to negate pressure build up in the comp tube to provide higher power? My FAC Diana 240 classic has the enlarged tp and i doubt any stronger a spring would make much difference.

Matt, i think that the fact that the B28 is heftier than a b25 may account for some of the lesser vibrations felt on the gun, which should make it easier to shoot. A 18 fpe 28 should be as mild as a 12 to 13 fpe 25. But the b25 (the one i have ) shoots about 16 fpe, so its a bit livelier. Now your canadian model was a joy to shoot, and probably incredibly easy to be very accurate with.
