conveyer belt trap

I have some heavy pieces of conveyer belt. It's from a rock crushing operation 4' wide, 1/2"> thick.
Some of that at an angle should stop a lot of pellets, .25 and smaller, before wearing out.
This project is in the planning stage. I would like to catch the pellets for casting.
Looking around for some short pieces of 2X12. Free ones are preferred.
I'm thinking the wood could be cut with a jig saw to be the sides of the trap, with the belting starting at the top, going around the back, covering the bottom, and coming up the face. Screws would be used to attach the belt to the wood.
Anybody ever do such a thing?
Any ideas?

Mark, I have a Champion bullet trap. I had access conveyor belt rubber from my place of work. I would cut the conveyor belt material into pieces so they would tightly fit the angled wall of the bullet trap. Works great for not only catching pellets, but also quieting the "ding" that occurs when pellets hit the steel of the trap. After awhile the pellets start to pile up inside the rubber & the rubber swells for all the lead piling up.
One thing I will mention is that, lower powered shots will not penetrate the rubber & may bounce. I've shot the rubber with PCPs up to 100fpe with great results. The hardest part is cutting the rubber into pieces. The stuff is tough. I used to cut it with a chop saw at work. It has a tendency to smoke really bad. Like rubber tires in a burn out pit.

I have a champion bullet trap too.
The scheme of the conveyer belt trap is for a large trap. Big enough to have five airgun silhouettes lined up, and
spaced regulation distance apart. Then catch the targets too!
My preferred method of cutting heavy belting, mark a line with silver sharpie. Turn the belting over, then fold it back and kneel on it with the line exposed on the bend. then have at it with a sharp utility knife.
Take a light cut first, the bend in the belt makes the cut open up and reduce friction, then heavier cuts to get through the fibers.

That should work good. I have some similar rubber material in 5/8" and my TalonSS.177 penetrates it to about the length of a pellet.
My current trap/box, using 1lb. duct seal bricks from Home Depot, works well but I could put rubber in instead.
INGREDIENTS:
1) 2" x 4" pressure treated lumber, Four pieces cut to 9" makes a nice rectangular box that perfectly accepts four of the 1lb duct seal bricks, or rubber.
2) 9" x 12" plywood on the backside
3) Office spring clip to hold target paper
4) 2.5" wood screws

Jhonny,
Nice trap, but how are you seperating the pellets from the duct seal?

Thanks, simple and cheap. I just tried recovering pellets from another well-used duct seal trap and it's difficult. It can be done but I have no interest in it.
I think after you've been hammering the rubber backed trap the pellets will form a layer and new pellets will be fairly easily recovered as they stack on top of each other.
I shot a few into the rubber, with the TalonSS.177 at 17 yards and the regulator set 100 bar (LOW POWER) and it still sticks into the rubber. It seemed loud as I recall, moreso that duct seal, so I changed back over. I wanted more quiet.

The noise will not be much of a problem here. But thanks for the information on the 177 penetrating the belt.
25 might not penetrate, but sure will murder store bought silhouettes. Might have to make some.

That depends on the .25.
My .25 Sumatra carbine (85fpe) & .22 Rainstorm-I (50fpe) penetrate the 5/8" conveyor belt rubber

Tested some belting this evening. The 25 does put holes in it.
Ten, 10 grain domes at 790 fps fired as a group pretty much bounced off, but did enough damage the belting just will not do.
I have a large 18x19" trap. Wood sides, 1/4 mild steel back and top. Used the handle and wheels of an old lawnmower so it can be moved like a hand truck.
It needed a new face so I used a little bit of belting for that.
Now just put the other 400 sq ft of belting to use.

I'll add that rubber mulch works great too and floats. I use two rubber made containers one filled with what ever amount of rubber mulch you'll need and then slide another one on top. I bolted mine together. Put targets inside and put lid on when done. Pull them apart and put water in the container with the rubber mulch which will float. Scoop out mulch drain water and you have all your pellets.
