Title: Economy side focus scope for Umarex Gaunlet2
Post by: TARHEELSHOOTER 58 on September 15, 2021, 03:19:41 PM
Hi guys, I am considering an Umarex  Gauntlet2 as my first PCP airgun. I am looking for a decent quality side focus (AO) multi powered scope, either 3-9 or 4-16 power mil-dot reticle, 1" or 30mm tube. I have a Centerpoint 4-16 x 40 mil-dot on a Hatsan 125 Sniper but not side focus, that has done pretty well for a couple of years but the new model has gone to 4-16x44 with side focus but a BDC reticle which I don't care for (the BDC reticle). Anyone have a good suggestion for a scope in this price range ( around $100 ) that is decent quality and meets my preferences as stated above? Secondly does anyone know if I will need extra high rings to clear the magazine on the Gaunlet2 ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

A couple of years later I am still impressed with my two Bestsight 5-15x50 scopes.   About $70 from AliExpress at the time but I haven’t checked lately.

The Truglo 4-14x44 from Midway is also quite good for the money.

My thoughts on the two of them here:

They're up by about$2. Thinking about getting one not that I have anything to mount it on lol 😂.

I have a UTG Bug Buster 3-12x32 that's OK. Cyclops Joe recommended a Hawke Vantage in similar zoomies when I asked him which would be better.

I also have the UTG Bug Buster 3x12 and picked up a side wheel for it. Works fine for me

4-16x40 Discovery with pop up caps and side wheel for $80 on Amazon.

It works.

I've only read one complaint about the refurbished scope. I have 3 and all are like new. Imo great scope for the money. The price usually drops to 59$ every other week.

I looked for the Tru-Glo 4-14x44 but could not find it on Midway or anywhere else. I saw the Bestsight on Ali express. What are the import duty fees when ordering from them and how long does shipping typically take? I also found a Leapers UTG Classic 3-12x44 with mil-dot reticle and side focus for just under $100. Have any of you had any experience with Leapers UTG scopes? Thanks!!

I second the Discovery scope. I have a Discovery VT-Z 4-16x50 first focal plane. I bought mine on eBay for $130. Side wheel, flip up caps and sun shade. Turrets track good, little fuzzy when it’s cranked all the way up, but it’s still clear enough to do some pretty precise work. First focal plane raised my first shot hit at long range percentage up more than anything, and that’s really cheap for a FFP scope.

I’ve also got two UTG scopes, I prefer the discovery for about the same price. My UTG scopes always got the job done though, no real complaints.

I've got one on my Sumatra. The target I have as a avatar was shot using a Aspen with a UTG classic 3-13x44. Love the scope but make sure you get a wheel for the side focus as it's very stiff to move.

These are really good scopes. I have two and others here have more than that.

I had a UTG bug buster 3-9 but it started shifting zero on it's own and when I sent it to UTG they stopped communicating with me.  Didn't fix it and won't even return a call or email.  I would not recommend them.

I replaced it with a Hawke Vantage 2-7 and it works great.  It is on my Prod.

I had a Primary Arms 4-14 on my Avenger but I did not like where I had to have the eyepiece due to where the rail is.  So I bought a West Hunter 4-16.  It came with a big side wheel, sunshade, and rings for $150.  It also has a "christmas tree" reticle.  Works great.  Glass doesn't seem super clear but it shouldn't be at this price.  Plenty clear enough for normal airgun ranges, I just have difficult seeing 25 caliber holes at 100 yards with it.

I think the Primary Arms is a better scope, just didn't work great on my Avenger.  It will probably go on my next gun.

Primary Arms and West Hunter are side focus, my Hawke Vantage is not.

The gaunlets are known to be on the heavy side.  If using for hunting and field carry, suggest looking for a "lightish" scope.  If mostly bench rest, heavy is fine.

Heavy enough that a lite scope isn't really going to change that....doubt you'd notice saving 4 or 5 oz.   Generally, I just let the big heavy rifles go ahead and collect the big heavy scopes, figuring I'm not going to on a long hike with the big guns.

I will need to keep track of this on mine, need to sight it back in after having the barrel out and scope off. And if it goes bad, I'll just shoot it and save the return postage money for something better.

I guess you agree, not a good gun for field carry.  ;)

IMO, the gun and scope should be tailored to the primary use.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I think I am going to try the Discovery VT-Z 4-16x50 SF FFP from ebay. It seems to have the most features for the money. I do not worry about perfect clarity at the highest power as I seldom use that power except when sighting in. I mostly hunt and shoot casual target for my own pleasure. I cannot shoot my firearms much due to the ammo situation so I am looking to shoot air vs. powder so I can stay in practice and not break the bank. I like air gun shooting anyway. I cannot even shoot traditional black powder much as fllints and caps are in short supply!! I will post how everything works when I get it all together which will be after Christmas as part of this will be from my wife for Christmas.  Thanks again for all the suggestions and all of y'all stay safe and healthy this fall.

Do so little of that kind of long hike thing now, most of my every day airguns are on the heavy side of things.  Either shooting from a bench or set up out in the woods in ambush (rather than going after them).

Figure a Gauntlet II with scope, sling, maybe a bi-pod would run close to 10.3-10.5 pounds.   Not really going to notice 6 ounces.

Do use side  adjusting scopes and objective adjusting scopes for the shooting I do...really don’t have a preference.  If I did field target type shooting, I likely would go with side parallax adjustments.

No complaints if you want side focus….or side leaver over bolt….or  left inserting mag vs right inserting mag...pick rail or grooves….a whole lot of stuff others find "live or die" just doesn't matter to me.

Either a Discovery or a Westhunter scope on Amazon, they are cheap and work well

I think you will like the Discovery. Whole lot of scope for the money, and it’s very clear until you get to the top end of its zoom. Even then it’s not bad at all, I shoot very good groups with it maxed out. would look at which reticles they offer also. The one I got is a very fine crosshairs with hashmarks and a very small dot for your aiming point. I like this reticle, it makes for a very fine bead, but I also have very good eyesight. My dad lost the dot a little in the low light woods, his eyes aren’t quite as good anymore.

Here’s a terrible picture of the reticle. The new iPhone doesn’t seem to take very good scope pictures. I used to get good one with my iPhone X. Anyway hope this helps.

I have found the popular 14x ffp to be quite decent

I haven't tried one of these yet but they have very good reviews on AGN.

I have a Discovery 6x24 ffp that I have been quite happy with, just heavy as sin.

Side focus scopes are great ergonomically and easy to adjust the parallax, but I do not own a single SF scope that is not off by 10 yards or more, even my "expensive" ones.  I have a $350 Nikon SF on one of my PB's and that's off too.  All my other $100 to $200 SF scopes I have on AG's read the wrong distance too when things clear up.  I have sent some of them back and the replacement scope was the same thing, maybe 5 yards less error instead of 10-15 at 30 (actual)  :(

for a better quality scope that is second focal plane you could look at the Athlon Talos 4-16x40, it's affordable and really good, I have one on my Uragan and on my Mrod, just took 17 GS's with the Uragan the furthest shot was 160 yards, scope set on 10x power and it was clear as a bell.
