Title: Some frame machining for various purposes.
Post by: MJP on July 28, 2021, 04:50:01 PM
Just thought that I need a alu frame for a gun, now it turned to guns and at least three frames, or four will be made.
(https://img.aijaa.com/t/00554/14994949.t.jpg) (https://aijaa.com/AQ9HQg)
One side done.
(https://img.aijaa.com/t/00162/14995446.t.jpg) (https://aijaa.com/48E7zH)
Mocking the part on Badger just to see if the overall dimensions are sound.
Not ment for this rifle but I think it could end up on it.

Interesting! I bet that made a bunch of chips.

Is it designed for ar furniture?

Dave
Yes and no, only ar grip is used, I hate the imperial thread on the buffer tube systems. And to be honest, all the buffer tube furniture looks the same.
Some 35-50L of chips from two frames.

Thanks,
A lot, and alot of time consuming to mill the contours with ball endmill. Roughing amd finishing about 4h per side. I need to optimize the code some if I'm making more of them.

Is the top channeled for a tube? If so, what size?

Lots of possibilities with that frame….

Top is still blank, they will be machined one for tube and one for my Anschutz 22LR when time permitting.

The picture service that I use to post is down, need to find something else to post pictures.

Frame is semi done, I inlet one B class frame that have machining defects for the Badger to test out the frame and components.
I'll post some pictures when the service is ok again or I'll find a better free photo service / host.
Any suggestions on that?

4-12 may be a little big. I do all mine from my phone and it asks what size I want to use. I just pick from the options.  My pictures are already on my phone so…

I can make file size smaller too by taking a picture farther away then cropping it. That’s the way I used to do it.

very cool.. im trying to figure out how you made the buttstock.. I Know the design is 2 piece , or maybe its 3 piece ? still havent figure it out\.. looks like the stem section ( 27mm round ) is oxidized.. yet , the back end is not.. leads me to think its 2 well blended pieces.

Thanks guys,

Yea it's two parts, 30mm round with dovetail ish fitting secured with a center bolt.
Just about seamless fitting, you'll see it if you know it's two separate parts.

Made a bag rider on the stock for bench rest shooting. Get a better tracking of the rifle through out the shot.

Thanks,

Well 7075 is not the most forgiving when anodizing and wanting to color it.
So black is this time something like Fifty Shades of Gunmetal.
(https://i.ibb.co/pzxNfKF/4-DA37-F8-D-1425-44-D3-9-F82-60-D5-C8-ABE4-BF.jpg) (https://ibb.co/wWR8SQm)
Can't win every time, bath heated up too much and I forgot the part for too long in the acid. One of the alu wires was already cut from being too long in.
So not enough current and oxide layer was too small.
But not so bad I kind of like it.

Maybe not what you intended; but I personally think it looks better with that gunmetal finish-if it came out perfectly black, it'd be monotone-now it just pops between the action and grips...
Me likey!  :D

Wow!  Looks really good.  I was wondering why not 6061.  Is it a strength issue or milling issue?

Thanks guys for your kind words.

7075 T6 is the go to material on what I usually make and that is what I have in stock. Customer work is mostly done out of this and it's just about the toughest alloy readily available so why not use it on gun parts too.

BTW, that alu piece underneath the rear stock, is it a folding handle for BR/ prone shooting?

Thanks guys!

Have been too involved in one project lately and there is much snow here. So not so much thinking about airguns. Had to anodize some other stuff so did these the same time.
A lot of plans for new stuff but have to see when there is time to machine.

Marko
Title: Re: Some frame machining for various purposes.

And speaking about the new stuff, a little teaser of a new frame for the savage 45.
Want to get away from the tube guns and more stiffer upper.
(https://i.ibb.co/M7TFxwb/B7-D04602-4294-411-B-B563-D2-C2305-BD088.jpg) (https://ibb.co/yqTHcvD)
So all machined from 7075 T6 billet, picatiny rail and breach.

Thanks Rob,
I use Haimer 3D taster. Bit expensive but well worth the money. Once it's calibrated you can measure within 0.01mm at any direction. Good enough for any work I do.

Thanks Dave,

This is kind a hybrid project, fitting savage .457 upper on the old 20mm frame.
Had the barrel with and adapter on the frame some time ago and it was interesting.

Fits ok, now need to make some modifications to the barrel. Going to have locking lugs on the barrel and bolt.

384gr soft point goes 276m/s at 220bar and 304m/s at 300bar so I'm ok with that.
Need to do something about the recoil, slightly too much bounce from the hammer.

some kind of clamshell  bullpup action ?
Title: Re: Some frame machining for various purposes.
Post by: MJP on May 22, 2023, 03:55:34 AM
Well not exactly, just my take on the L2 frame.
Didn't like the low scope rail and have a bad neck. So need risers and medium rings.
Now can use just rings without the risers.
(https://img.aijaa.com/m/00803/15152965.jpg) (https://aijaa.com/2HCu0q)
Also adapted a Tikka front guard for longer barrel use.
Oh yeah trigger group is a 3D printed prototype for testing different trigger geometry to get a lighter trigger on higher plenum pressure.

Have some other changes to the gun too.
(https://img.aijaa.com/m/00690/15155382.jpg) (https://aijaa.com/9kmxh3)

Returned the original rear to the leshiy 2 and needed something for this one.
So made some parts.
Valve is slightly modified, without restriction that the .22 leshy valves have. It's making 101J at 180bar now.
