Title: Mount clamp claw
Post by: A moron on July 17, 2021, 02:34:59 PM
I was goofing around and thought about A mount issues here ,and something I noticed way back is the clamp claw is reversible.

Or it think it is cause I never seen this in a manual that comes with a mount or at least the ones I got so far.

So most claim fits 9-11 or 3/8 dovetail slot

Then notice the claw part that fits in the dovetail is 2 sizes or one a bit longer  like one side for 11mm and one side for 3/8 ( pic 1)

But  once I mounted one and the clamp was  slanted and would put crooked stress on the screws.( Pic2).

Flip it and you get a square straight flush fit (pic 3)

Anyway I check this now and if needed flip it over to the correct fit on the Rail, and I don't guess I ever seen one marked for orientation or in a mounting instructions of the part .

So for fun just looking for opinions on that or what f thereount points any of that out.

Good catch, Deeco.  This comes up from time to time.  If you look carefully at the claw you will note each side is cut at a different angle.  3/8" and 11 mm are not terribly different mathematically but one set of grooves is cut at 45 degrees and the other is cut at 60 - don't remember which is which.  Before I attempt to mount a dovetail mount on a gun I pull that plate.  I will try it against the dovetail to see which side fits best.  I'll put it back on the mount with that side down.  It's a system that works for me.  I also make sure the scope stop screw is backed off.  Tightening the mount slightly will hold it on the gun but I should be able to slide the mount back and forth in the dovetails.  That way I know it will be secure when tightened.  I can then begin screwing the scope stop down.  When it engages in the hole it will only permit a very small amount of forward / back motion.  I'll then push the scope mount to the rear to the stop then tighten the mount.  If you have a T06 Diana do NOT attempt to tighten the scope stop securely.  It will pull the dovetail on the gun away from the receiver loosening the rivets.  There is no way for an end user to tighten it back.  The part is ruined.

The "feature" you mention is one of the reasons I've abandoned mounts with a clamp plate in favor of a one piece mount like this plus a set of Picatinny/Weaver rings..........

Ya, Ed I was looking at that way but I shoot a lot of open sight and I guess that mounting may be impractical for me

Matter of fact someone  here in another thread pointed that out to me and dashed that deal...

But ya, that looks more solid/ secure  if I shot scope full time.

After posting with the guy on the scope coming loose I was in the shop  pulling a scope to shoot open and that popped in to mind .

Some time back I got a mount same as the rest I use  but when I put it on and went to tighten it I noticed this and sure enough it from as flipped vs the other 2 like it..

Anyway  I assumed that was the case  one side 11mm one side 3/8.

And maybe it's not a factory standard on what way it's installed on the mount ?

One more on that with a 2 ring mount.

If you don't catch this and one ring is correct on the 11mm claw but the 2ed ring is on the 3/8 claw  if it would pull the scope from true straight or have it cockeyed?

You'd think it have to

Thing is I never seen info on any of that and how many guys don't know and have scope issues  cause nothing on or in the box tells . Lol..

I THINK that the "claw" that registers the position of the mount on the dovetails is the "fixed claw" opposite the clamp plate, however I'm guessing that the "tilt" of the scope would be affected if the clamp plates were opposite on the two rings. With a one piece mount however that isn't an issue..........

Ya, a year or so back I got a mount same I been using and put it on and just snugged it to hold on wile I checked the stop screw and noticed it was slanted  .I scratched my head and then looked at one I had mounted and it was nice and parallel  . I scratched my head and then noticed the difference in the claw size of each side .   Flipped it over and all was good

After that I just assumed one side for 3/8 and one she de for 11mm.

But I've found no documention  / instruction on it from a mount manufacture. Nothing on or in a bag x it came in on the clamp orientation for 3/8 or 11mm . Nothing

Then I got to wonder how many guys  don't notice or know mount it and have scope hold issues?

Don't know if it's right or wrong but I just thought I d put it out there for comment to see what's said on that.

I've flipped several double sets over and never had it work for me without a cant. Don't bother anymore. Dave

Since the original question was "Have I ever seen anything on packaging or included instructions that mentions those reversible plates".....

Picture of the insert that comes in the packaging of the Hawke scope rings I use on the bulk of my rifles and it does mention that plate and even has their recommended screw torque recommendations at the bottom. Your mileage may vary and greatly with other brands/makers, although I have a Diana Bullseye ZR mount here that had nothing in the box except the mount and it does have a reversible plate on it.

I've had them cant and if I couldn't fix it I turned the scope tube so the reticle was level with the gun even though the mount was canted.

A few times when the claw was not flush against the mount but had a gap like in Ed's pic, I've had the claw break in half length way on a one piece and two piece mounts.

Lately I've had two 2 piece sets would not mount so the scope was straight. Went to a one piece and the scope was straight. I threw the two 2 pcs sets in the trash. Then later I wanted the one pcs for something else and had a scope on the self with a 2 pcs set already on the scope, mounted it and it was straight.

Deeco, mentioned liking to use open sights on occasion. I have several guns with the scope on top of tall see thru mounts so I can use the scope or open sights. Sometimes it
want work because the open sight is blocked by the bottom of the scope or the top or bottom of the mount. Or sometimes you can use a different weight pellet for the scope and open sights. I have that with regular scope and some scout scopes.

Ya, I wonder on a 2 piece of you had one clamp for 11mm and one 3/8 side of it pulls it off.

A buddy and I use to build gaming rigs and about every 2 years you'd have to upgrade to keep up with new PC games

Anyway my buddy would say " seems like Everytime you buy something how the quality slips some how or in some way.".

Maybe I'm wrong and most times I am, but like these mounts look at the 100's like at Amazon and guys say buy these there made in the UK.

When you look at it don't look no different then the cheap one from china.  Then you know that aircraft grade aluminum  there useing I'd stock from china anyway..lol.  then in reviews near same complaints if a less the 4 star .    Like the screws used I bet there the same m4 used from china as used in china mounts

I just sent a leapersount back  and told I should of bought so and so's  mount .  Well what's to day I did and ended up the same?

I tried see through " once"  but not twice.
With the one piece I can remove the scope and remount it without loosing zero  if I do it ain't much.   I think only on one I may see a little fuzz in the bottom of the scope of the rest blade  pretty much a non-issue.

Wow!! Sunshine.... I may get a shot in today.

I figured out how to fix cant in a one piece mount. Add thin washers to the Allen screws.  This keeps the screw from binding the clamp piece.  I discovered this by accident and now I have added washers to all my one piece mounts.

Ya, I noticed I check as I torque them  weather the front or rear screw needs to adjust.

All my one piece has just 3 base screws  so you can pivot it so to say.
