Title: Looking for Help Fixing Cracked RAW Stock
Post by: Gear_Junkie on February 26, 2021, 04:50:29 PM
I picked up a used RAW HM1000X stock recently.  As I was inspecting the stock, I noticed that both of the front tabs next to the gauge and fill port had been broken off and glued back on.  The seller forgot to share this piece of info  ::) but did give me a slight refund after I requested it.  The issue is that the glue job really bugs me and You can feel the crack when you run your fingers over the stock.  I posted a couple pics but the cracks don't show up in the pics as well as they do in real life.

I would like to just cut off the tabs and reshape and re-stain the stock.  I included a pic of how I would like the stock re-shaped.  I thought about sending it out to be properly repaired by someone, but then I would be out $150 in S&H PLUS the actual repair work.  The main issue is that I don't have the proper tools to do it myself.  I could use a Dremel to make the cuts, and do the shaping.  I'm thinking this would be the slowest and safest way to do this.  Does anyone else have any better ideas using common tools?  It's a nice stock, so I really don't want to mess it up, but I also don't want to spend a bunch of money on new tools to do the perfect job.

Also, does anyone have a guess as to what stain was typically used on these stocks?

Thanks!

Forcing the stock off when a bottle is still attached does this  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Rough cut it off , then using those @ 1/2" sanding drums in the dremel tool, work the profiles to your satisfaction.
Done a few of these as well other stock mods ... can relate !!!

I had some free time today so I went to work with the Dremel.  Before I started, I made a template to hopefully cut both sides as even as possible.  I then used a mix of cutting discs and sanding drums to get the shape I wanted.  I also reshaped a couple areas that weren't quite symmetrical to slightly ease my OCD.  I then fine sanded the areas with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth things out.  I wrapped the sandpaper around a piece of PVC pipe to get the curved areas.  It worked out pretty well.  The hard part was finding the right stain.  After 3 trips to 2 different hardware stores, the closest match was Minwax Special Walnut in semi-translucent.  It's not perfect but close enough.  I also ordered some RLO.  I plan to coat the stock 1 or 2 times and hopefully that will add a slight satin sheen and also even things out.  Overall, I'm happy how the job turned out.  Thanks for the tips Scott!
