Silver Streak super long hammer spring - causing resealing difficulties.

Hi,
I'm repairing a Silver Streak.
After the reseal, I can't get the valve to close on the first pump:
the hammer spring, which looks original, is so long, that it pushes the valve open, and the first pump cannot make it close.
So the air escapes through the barrel.
I have had this issue before, but can't remember how I solved it.
I replaced the check valve spring. Perhaps I should try another valve spring (the long one)? There are two metal rings between the two springs (as usual).
I could also reduce the length of the hammer spring. That might be the easiest way. Not too short though, as the gun will then not dump all its air on the shot.
Many thanks,
Louis
Ps. Oops, another question. I am going to replace the rear sight. The old one, that was badly damaged, is off. Is it correct that I need to spread the "feet" of the replacement rear sight, before I push it on the two metal bars on either side of the barrel? And then push the feet firmly onto the metal bars with careful force from pliers?

what if we removed all the warning labels, and let nature take it's course?

Just cock the gun, before you pump. De-cock it after you get a couple of pumps in it.
It's not that the hammer spring is too long, it's just stronger than the valve spring.

I agree to just cock it first. There are plenty of well used Sheridans around that red to be cocked first.
There are several ways to deal with the rear sight. I usually just reinstall it. If I alter one, I prefer to measure the difference between the” feet” with a caliper. Then file a little off each side to widen the opening a bit.

Thank you gents.
I was repairing this gun for a "client"; I make a little bit of hobby money by bringing abused Sheridans back to life here in Holland (there are many of them: I think Sheridan did good business over here in the eighties). The client didn't like the idea of having to cock first: his idea is that this is "wrong".
Anyway.
The solution was very simple: I added a metal washer between the two springs in the valve. So there are now 3 washers instead of 2.
The valve holds air on the first pump, even with that huge hammer spring.
Too bad I cut the hammer spring before I came up with this idea. I tried several things to make the gun dump all its air with 8 pumps, but it really needs that huge hammer spring.
So I took one of those out of my Silver Streak. That's ok, as I have an adjustable hammer spring that I will put in my Silver Streak, with the aim to find a tension where I can get two good shots at say 8 pumps.

ok no sheridans should have to be cocked first in order to hold air for its first pump. The springs when new should be balanced for that. So first check your hammer springs dimension and use the correct one. Dimension should be 32 - 39 coils, .045" thick coil, .300" OD, 3.25-3.95" long.
The exhaust spring dimensions are 1.65" long,.072" thick coil, Tapered shape spring 13 coils OD .437-.485", intake (check valve) coil spring should be 6 coils, .040" thick,.405"OD,.625" long . Some of the newer exhaust valve springs are 1.90" long,.060" thick coil, and tapered OD .340-.470.
As for that Rear sight that uses its spring steel arms , I wouldnbt bother using it. They are known to put enough pressure to weaken the solder of the barrel to compression tube over time. Find the older rear sight that uses the set screws or set screw and dimple. Better still drill/tap for the williams 5D /SH peep sight.
When a sheridan is pumped at max charge of 8 pumps it should dump all its air with no residual left as checked by a recocking after the shot. MAC-1 Steriods changes some of this and those guns need to be cocked first before pumping because it needs a much heavier hammer spring to dump a much higher pressured charge to open that valve.
