Title: Anyone try a red dot sight on an air rifle??
Post by: tracka on March 12, 2012, 07:16:29 PM
Since my scope has been sent back to center point for replacement, I'm wanting to see what a red dot sight does on my gun.  Pyramyd says they don't recommend using a red dot sight on my Remington 22NPSS?  Anyone have any ideas about that?   Tracka

my brother had a bsa or a tasco(cant remember which one) red dot on his crosman phantom,i seen him drop rabbits out to 80 yards.
he swears by that red dot.
wasnt good for 10 yard paper punching though....printed 3/4 groups at 10 with red dot.

I use a red dot on all my low powered rifles.  I find it is MUCH easier to teach someone to use a red dot that it is to teach sight alignment.  As for will it stand up to a medium to high powered spring rifle, I don't know.  It probably depends on the specific brand/model.

I put one of those cheapo BSA $20 red dots on my Trail NP when a scope went bad on me. I was afraid I would break it but it was holding up after a couple hundred rounds. It was fun to shoot.

I would probably go to walmart and buy one of those Crosman red dots. So at least I would know it was airgun rated.

Shouldnt be a problem, but I don't see it lasting over 2000, rounds, well, at least a cheap sight.

I tryed red Dots on Pistols and rifles, I can shoot better Open Sights,
if I need to put something I have to look thru, than it would be a scope

Leapers should hold up well, at least to 17fpe.

God bless,

Farmer

Well, I went ahead and order one of these:
NcSTAR 1X30 Red Dot Sight DBB130/3
For $30.00 I'll put it on and see what happens, have read some pretty decent reviews on it.  Should get it on Friday hopefully. Tracka

I've used the Tasco 5 mil dot to teach my grandsons to shoot. Much simpler than either a scope or Iron sights. The accuracy is on par with good Iron sights, since there is no magnification. They have a 30mm lens so target acquisition is very quick and sure. For a quick 30 bucks you can't go wrong. One caveat, I'm not too sure about some of the Magnum springers, as their recoil is pretty rough. CO2 and pneumatics certainly. My quest 800X doesn't bother it.

Two things you want to consider in red dot scopes, are they really made for air rifles, and are they parallax free.

Can a scope be "parallax free"? I always try now to get scopes with an AO but on some of center points, they seem to work okay without it. Tell me more on parallax free?

Used a BSA red dot on my HW30 for awhile and it worked great for fast target acquisition , but it was only good out to about 25 yards.  I now have it mounted on my 2400KT for indoor pesting duties.

I assume you have a power adjuster on that 2400? Seems like a lot of power to unleash indoors if not?

Oh not in the house or garage.  I use it inside barns and out buildings eradicating pigeons and such.

Yup... Have a dot sight on my Talon-SS.
Green dot works better for me  out to 50yd.
Works on ground squirrels real well.
Those buggers run fast, but do stop to look around.
FOOLISH mistake...

I just ordered a Bushnell red dot. I am putting on my new PCP Umarex Origin. I will post back what I think of it.

Received my Umarex Origin and got the red dot installed. This red dot is really fun to shoot with. Of course this one is considered a lower budget one but I really like it so far. I have it mounted way forward from where a scope would have had to be. I am able to look through it with both eyes open so this really opens up my field of vision. This one being a 3 MOA works real good for my shooting range of generally from 10 to 40 yards. I am going to enjoy this without spending a ton of money on a scope and it works for what I want.

I have Bushnell Trophy red dots on both an HW30S and an HW50S and enjoy both when shooting my 25 and 30 yard spinner spoons.

I have a cheap CV life branded dot sight from Amazon on my Chiana Bandit. Gives me 1/2" groups at 25 yards, and that's all I have ever asked from it.

Edit, I just saw the dates on the first posts!
