Thinking about a muzzle loading smooth bore shot shooter from a 880. Would use possibly brake line for the barrel and would be short. Shooting distance will be close maybe longest shot 8 feet so I think the 880 platform would have the power. Am I nuts for this wild idea. Advice needed. Mike

Wouldn't it be easier to use a Powerline Model 35 that comes with a smooth bore barrel? Not enough power?

I think you should try it out! Brake line is cheap, strong, and easy to get, making it an excellent choice.
I've got a 880 that I converted to .22 caliber. Shooting 14.5 grain pellets, it averages 643 fps with 15 pumps. #8 shot weighs roughly 1 grain each. Using a patch with 10 shot pellets, you might be able to hit very similar numbers. Let's say the shot hits the target at 575 fps. The calculator says each pellet is capable of 1.4 inches of penetration in flesh. 50% of those hitting a small target like a mouse, hosp, etc. will be plenty to take them out.
You'll want to fill in the dish in the piston, bore out the throat in the valve, grind a bit off the top of the part of the abutement washer that goes into the valve body, and drill the transfer port out one drill size larger than the stock size. With a good o ring on the piston, you'll hit good consistent power with those mods.
As with a shotgun, you can pattern to see how far out your effective range is. Keep us posted!
