Title: Bad news for Daisy Avanti lovers.
Post by: JimG on February 24, 2017, 01:22:41 PM
Decided to add a Daisy 753 and 747 to my collection. Called AoA to order them yesterday. Neither was in stock. The gentleman I was speaking with then informs me that Gamo had bought Daisy. I actually already knew that but what he told me next was troubling. He said they could not order anymore because they are not being made right now and some models may be discontinued. After I hung up the phone I did a search of other vendors and found some still had various models in stock. But before ordering I thought I would call Daisy this morning and get the straight scoop on this. Here is what I asked the CS lady and her replies-

1. Is the Avanti line discontinued? Her response was "some models already are"

2. What models? Her response was "717 and 747 pistols are discontinued and the 753 rifle is not being made right now"

3. What about the other rifle models? Her response was " I don't know"

4. What about parts support for the tens of thousands of these airguns in use right now? Her response "we still have the parts for now but I can't say for certain we will always have them"

I thanked her for her honesty and said good day. Do what you will with this info, I'm just passing this on if you like these guns. I won't be buying a 753 or 747 now but that's just me.

I should add that I think it's a darn shame that a lot of kids and adults who enjoyed these crude but very accurate and easy to work on airguns are going to loose out now. There is nothing else like the 717/747 or x53 out there. Sad really.

Sad, I was afraid Gamo would do something like this when I read about the takeover.

I have, in the last year, considered a 747, but moved down other paths.   I am rather bothered (my issue, I know) by the reality of the truth above, because the situation is developed by persons not caring of the intrinsic value of certain items, just in making a profit.

Its a shame.  I always wanted to get a 753, just never took the plunge.  Funny thing is, I never see them for sale used.  People must really like them.

Your post brought a tear to my eye. In my early days I traded my 753 for a stupid Remington nitro piston. NP was new and I wanted one. I was so stupid!

By the way I have a hardly used, made in the good old USA Remington Nitro Piston for trade...

Wasn't Daisy still producing the 753 for use by the CMP?
If they were, it might explain why gamo stopped production.
Maybe they have a 753ish gamo model they want to be used in the CMP instead of the Daisy??
And then again, they may just be weeding out the models that don't move fast or aren't available on shelves at walmart :(

Nah, it will just morph into BSGaimy....

So who is running the betting pool on who gets bought next, Crosman or Hatsan?
Title: Re: Bad news for Daisy Avanti lovers.
Post by: avator on February 25, 2017, 11:20:45 AM
Nah.... Daisy did it to themselves by offering nothing other than low level bb guns and then doing everything possible to make those even cheaper. Both Crosman and Hatsan offer higher end options altho Crosman seems to be tightening the noose. Guns like the Disco, Mrod and "lego" are mainstays. The big turn off for me is, as the case with Crosman and GAMO, just how many times can you rename the same gun and market it as "the next best thing". It is sad but I think Daisy just may have shot their eye out kids.
I hope it all works out for the CMP program. Such a great program for the kids.

Well I changed my mind last night and decided to go ahead and find a 753 and 747 to order. Found a vendor who still had both and had some repair kits for the 753/853. Bought a 753, a 747, 2 of the basic rifle repair kits and one of the larger rifle repair kits. When I get an exploded parts diagram of the 747 I will order some repair parts for it from Daisy as well. Decided that this was probably the last chance to easily purchase them and I don't want to regret it later down the road.

Both these are doing pretty darn good.  Lots of new product line, recent investments in new tech and a large yet growing market.

I hope both companies are around for a very long time, since they both appear to listen and provide us fun new toys.

I'm glad I recently picked up a 747.  I enjoy it very much and think it's a shame it's discontinued.  Does it have any direct competitors in the affordable, accurate, single-pump pneumatic target pistol category?

Desmobob-

No, it does not have any comparably priced competition that has the same accuracy at all. If you want a SSP pistol and rifle for informal 10 meter shooting, the Avantis were about the only thing out there other than the used market.

About the only thing I have found close would be the  Air Venturi V10 (Gamo Compact) for $50-$75 more than the 747.
Still on my radar... but then I start thinking... AND that is never good.

With the parts list for your gun, you can order the repair kits/parts direct from Daisy.
And it sounds like I should do that for my 953/853 and 747.

Maybe someone with a good bit of experience should make a sticky listing parts to order, the seals obviously, the trigger parts that get worn or jacked up doing mods, etc.

I was lucky that about year ago when PA brought back the Gamo compact I picked one up. The price back then was about the same as the Avanti 717, good value. I also own an Avanti 747 and shoot it more than the Gamo.

This morning I placed another order w/DAMACO- almost $150.00 in just parts. Should tide me over for awhile. haha

Here's a few Daisy parts list/diagram pdfs. I don't know why Daisy doesn't list these on their site but they can be emailed to request them to be sent.

Model 753 (http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/images/c/c6/753_New.pdf)
Model 853 (http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/images/8/81/853.pdf)
Model 887 (http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/images/2/20/887.pdf)

Several more for BB guns is HERE (https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/putting-a-little-more-power-in-a-15-00-daisy.807316/), scroll down to posts #11 and #15.

This news is just a shame. I've got a 717 and 747 that I enjoy shooting very much. Without the Avanti line, Daisy is now reduced to inexpensive Chinese made BB and pellet guns (Probably the bulk of their sales).

well for now the 753 is still up on the Daisy web sight at $450...

The Powerline 953 is what got me back into air rifles... My neighbor pulled a beat up air rifle out of the cargo box of his truck... he had picked it up at a garage sale for $25 to thank me for helping him in a few times... got on line to get parts and to research... that is how I found this community.. ;D

thing about my 953 is that it did not match any of the descriptions... it was functionally and visually the same as the Avanti 853... except for being single shot only and Powerline 953 on the receiver...

another member ended up having one that matched mine... he had found an ad that matched what we had...turns  out his was a pre-order and mine was from Jan 1985 and the 31x to be made... it is also the first month they became available other than pre orders...

It will be sad if the line of affordable 10 meter match rifles/pistols that has been around since 1984 goes away...

The 2004 on 953  with the Daisy barrel brought the 953 back after production of the 953 stopped in 89... so just maybe there is a chance will be brought back...

I picked up two nice  853s today at the CMP north store. They have both MC and regular stocks in the rack. About a dozen total to choose from. I picked out 2 with nice wood. Tried them out when I got home and they are both tack drivers at 30'. One put 7 shots into a dime size hole and I'm not a great shot. The people working there were very nice and helpful. I will be refinishing one for my stepson for his birthday.

I'm pessimistic that Gamo will continue parts support for Daisy airguns, so I bit the bullet and ordered nearly $150 in parts for all the Daisys I own. I also repair worn out Daisy lever BB guns to give to kids, so some parts were bought for that. Still small scale- I've gifted four so far. Would be more but some folks seem to think a rusty Daisy Cub is somehow "collectable", so they want way more than they're worth.

What I really need is a source for Red Ryder-sized barrel seals- Daisy quit selling them when they went to the integral shot tubes. Daisy still sells them for the model 25 (M25 seals are slightly smaller diameter than used in the RR, Cub, etc.), and fortunately the M25 barrel seal works in the 'wide-frame' Daisys like the 95, 96, 99, etc. They'd be an easy part to make but the demand is likely too low for anyone to bother.

There is still good old fashioned leather. Pretty easy to make. All you need is the right sized punch and some 1/4" leather. I'm pretty sure there is someone out there that's making RR leather seals.

That just stinks. I have both a 753 and a 717. Does anyone have a list of the most common parts that need replacing. I did the 888 trigger mod on the 753, so I have a bunch of trigger stuff. But I am concerned about o rings and the air chamber on the rifle. I have had the 717 for 20 years, the only thing that I have replaced was the pump arm were the pin began to ovalize. Can you guys think of what a good 20 year parts list should be?

I just got off the phone with Daisy. Concerned that the parts would dry up for this wonderful rifle, I ordered what I thought and would be several decades worth of spare parts. I ordered 4 of the O-ring and valve rebuild kits  two complete screw packages comma and two of the aluminum pump tubes. I also orderedand similar parts for my 717. With shipping the total came to 43 bucks and I had no problems having them ship it direct to me as a customer, not as an FFL. It's too bad we have to worry about Parts availability for such a time-honored brand, but at least for now we can get what we need. Typically Daisy gets their stuff out pretty quick, I'll let you guys know if there was an error along the way.

The Demise of the Avanti name is a kiss of death to enthusiasts... but I think they feel as long as the movie "A Christmas Story" airs for 24 hours on Dec. 25th the Red Rider sales will keep them afloat.

Gamo will make a bunch of cheap guns that you won't be able to get parts for and hang the Daisy name on them. Owning Daisy also gives them direct access to the US market.

The 853 is still holding it's own, in that class and price of rifle.

But the upper end sportsteres that the 888 and 887 owned, has been taken over by the Crosman Challenger 2009.
What is sad is that the original Challenger had enough "issues," that the rifle had to be redesigned.  The Challenger 2009 is the 2nd version of the rifle.
So Daisy had time to do "something" to counter the Challenger, but seemingly nothing happened.  Although the issues of making a CA rifle is not insignificant.  I doubt that the soft metal of the x53/888 receiver would safely handle the higher pressure of a CA source.

The Airforce Edge had an accuracy issue with their first version, but they did not do the needed redesign to solve that issue.  So another potentially good rifle died in infancy.
Daisy could have bought the rights to the Edge, fixed the accuracy issue, and released a version 2 as an Avanti rifle.  Opportunity lost . . .
