Looking for a down and dirty pump for a trunk tire well gun, May buy a Benji !
For 45 ish yard Starlings, etc, etc, would you go with 22 or 177. Shooting flat is important, but fpe is also on the table. Looking for a step up to my Daisy 880's which I love.
I will be shooting heavy pellets to give me the best BC I can get. (10.5gr Crosman's in 177 and 18.1gr in .22) ---- (I may go with 14.3gr Crosman's in .22 just because they are cheap as heck for short range stuff)
I will have just iron sights on this gun, and will be funking up the stock I think for a down and dirty camo look.. This with be an addition to my 630 fps barrel breaker truck gun that is in .22.
Just getting your idea ? Remember, this is to be a down and dirty gun to keep in my car and have available when I get the urge to let er rip, or I'm in an area where targets of opportunity present themselves !!!
I will buy on Friday from Crosman to get the lowest price I can !!

Either cal. would work well for what you describe.
Flatter trajectory in .177, more thump in 22. and still pretty flat shooting to 40 yds. For hunting.
I have the 392and love it, but would love to have the 397 to go with it.
When they come out with the new model synthetic stock later this year, I may do that very thing.
Good luck with whichever you choose!

Have you guys seen the "new" ones from crosman. The 392S abs 397S. They seem to be advertising more fps than usual. New valve, or just hype, I wonder. If they are getting real 1000 fps in 177 I'll bite. Ill settle for 900's. They're claiming 1100fps.
-
Personally, I would go with and older 140/1400. They can be had for $150ish. Don't need to be pristine because it's going in the trunk. Compact, strong and accurate. They just don't make them like they used to.

Looks like the same spec to me - 397S 800 fps lead (added 1100 alloy); 392S 685 fps lead (added 800 alloy). And a huge price increase.
-
Since you already have a .22 break barrel in your trunk, I'd stay with .22 & get the 392.
Especially if you can come up with a pellet that both rifles shoot well. Keep it simple, one ammo for two rifles

Yes, my break barrel is shooting JSB 15.9gr Jumbos at about 635fps so keeping both guns in the same caliber would be the smart thing to do !

Just got this gun and it's pretty nice in .22.
Trigger bad tho. Even with light modding, the trigger group is still really tight.
Here's some of what you'll be looking at: https://www.airgunsmith.com/392/triggertune.htm (https://www.airgunsmith.com/392/triggertune.htm)
The front rollpins in mine were *super* tight. But they will come out and allow you to clean all the gunk (paint flakes, etc.) out of the tubes.
You can mount a scope with an adapter that ranges from $10 to $60. The stock iron sights not so good. There is a peep sight available.
Or grab some FO inserts and plumber's putty and mod the stock irons.
Oh, please note the rifle (mine at least) is brass painted black. The paint is/will flake and there is a lot of overspray that should be cleaned up.

I called Crosman about that very thing a few days ago.
I was told the speed is the same for lead. The high end rating is for alloy.
The new model is rated for 10 pumps though, somethings not adding up?
Guess we’ll know for sure before long.
I was told they were to have a meeting in a week or two about all the new models and their specs.
The pump arm looks longer in the picks to me, and was told by the rep that she “ thought” it was.
Wait and see game I guess.

I bought a 392 in September. I prefer .22 over .177. Just a personal preference. Also, my trigger was dern near perfect right out of the box, and extremely accurate. It likes JSB Exact Heavy Jumbo 18.13 grain pellets. A lot.

Have you chronoed your gun with that pellet ... would love to know the velocity ?, Also what oil to use, do I use the same 30wtnd oil that I use in my Daisy 880 ? ..... I'm assuming so !

Sure have...using five pumps, averaging 509.7 FPS over a ten shot string with JSB Jumbo 18.13 grain pellets. If I pump to eight, it will get up to 584.3 FPS. 10.5 FPE. I use Crosman Pelloil, I suspect you're just fine with the thirty weight oil.

I would be on the lookout for Vintage 392P's or 397P's or PA's with the "P" trigger group.
-
Well, I'm warming up to order first thing in the am .. need the big discount from AGNation and the free Friday shipping from Crosman to do it as funds are a wee bit tight right now. Will get the .22 version.
Will have a thick airgun sock made to protect her.
These guns are not really made for scope installation IMHO as I don't like any of the after market mounts, so I will be getting a Williams sight for it unless the iron sights on the gun are OK for shots in the 25-35 yrd area.
Plan on using a heavy pellet for hunting as the BC is much better, but for messing around the CPHP might be just fine. Hopefully the trigger will be OK, but if not, a change of a spring and a bit of polishing may be in order.
My ordering finger is getting itchy ;- )

I hate my scope mount, but it does work.
After 500 shots or so, mine is developing a taste for CPHPs. Mine has a 10/25yard zero at 5 pumps, i dunno what that is in FPS or FPE.
Best of luck to you.
-
This IMO is the best mount available. Can be mounted over the breech or scout mounted. Will not cause barrel separation either.

$50 + shipping for a mount on a pumper.... sorry, I gotta pass.
The peep, IMO, works best for me in my type and range of shooting these guns. (Benjamin and Sheridan) YMMV
I like the experience of shooting this platform with the peep and even iron (open) sights when my old eyes cooperate.
I have several scoped guns for that experience. We have the Metal/Metal 880s in .177 scoped and the 2100s with wood furniture in .177 scoped. They definitely fill the scoped pumper niche.
-
I agree peep sights are great & look great on guns, especially vintage. However, these guns can easily get out there beyond this old man's less than 2020 vision. Have to side with Dave on the Mac1 mounts. Far superior to any others on the market & when mated with better than avg optics is a killer combo. Granted though, they are a little top heavy on the price. :(
-
I would agree 100% if my main interest and arsenal were limited to this type of gun...
Just saying, I have better options for guns to put scopes on if that's how I want to shoot.
-
Hey guys, thank you so much for your info ... ya that Mac1 mounts looks very nice .... if I get in the market to scope this gun, that is the mount I would get ... It does look much better than anything else out there !!

Never had a 397 but I like my 392 better then any gun I had and have .
-
Just placed the order at 9pm Pacific Time (12am Eastern) with discount for a 392 :- )
392 will probably be here next week ! Now it is time to get ready .... a soft case and a few other items that may be needed if this airgun is called upon.

If you do opt for the MAC1 mount don't forget to add some Secret Sauce to your order.

I'm glad you decided on the 392 it's just a beast of a gun. And I know you'll hear a lot of complaints about the factory sights but I love them I've shot with a scope and the gun is much more fun without a normal scope. I have never tried a pistol scope up further on the barrel but that would seem the way to go with this particular air rifle because it is very comfortable to grab the top of the receiver when pumping unfortunately you can't do that when there is a scope mounted. That's why you see a lot of people putting on a Williams peep sight. They are known to be much more accurate but I just like open sights better. One word of advice though don't over pump your gun at all they are not like a 760 or a 1377. There is a Rubber seal in the valve and if you over pump this gun the air pressure will destroy this Rubber seal. ask me how I know ::)Also the rubber is not as flexible in cold weather and non-stop 8 pumps in cold weather will also prematurely destroy the Rubber seal in this gun. go on ask me how I know :( You will also hear people say don't over oil the gun. This is not entirely true. And you should slightly over oil your gun and dry fire the excess oil out of the gun so there is oil in your valve. If you oil the gun like the manufacturer says you probably will not get any oil in your valve and the pollutants that enter your valve will start to corrode the inside of the valve walls no matter if it is made of aluminum or brass. My brass valve was so badly corroded inside I never thought it was going to work again . The newer guns come with a brass valve once again because it is more resistant to this corrosion. However the brass valve will corrode if it is starving of oil... the gun is amazing and I can get 1"groups at 30 yards resting with scope... but you will have no problem head hunting squirrels with the open sites within 10 yards

OP, might I suggest a GunMate soft case for your new 'beast'...available on Amazon for about $25.00 or thereabouts. When I order a new air rifle, I get one of those coming so it won't be chilly when I'm not shooting it!
After you get your new 392, feel free to get ahold of me...I'm not too far from you in that I live in Satanclaritatrafficlighthell...I've got mine set up just perfect, and it's pretty much out of the box! I got a good 'un...I installed the Williams peep sight, and for this rifle, in my opinion, there just isn't any other rear sight to consider! Very intuitive, very accurate, but the bad news is that there are reports that this sight isn't being manufactured until late spring or early summer, but you might want to check around a bit, I'm certain there are retailers out there that have a stock of them. I'd get on that ASAP if you're considering going this direction.
Good luck with your new toy!

You have named the things I plan on doing !
Been looking for the Williams sight and they are all sold out as of now, will need to wait a couple of months on purchasing that :-(
As of now the only internal mod, besides cleaning will be to remove the anti de-cocking hump on the trigger mechanism... when cocked, I wish to be able to decock the gun. Also when a pump of air is in the gun, I don’t want the gun to be cocked !!!
wll
-
Will,
Did’nt know if you were aware of this, but the 392 does’nt have to be cocked to put a pump of air in it for storage.
I just mention this as you mentioned de cocking.
As far as de cocking when pumped up to shoot, then yes, have to remove the hump as you knew.
One thing about the iron sights on mine.... I had to “ crawl “ as far forward on the stock as I could to use the existing irons or the peep sight.
It works, but the current stocks are a bad design for iron sight work.
I hope the new synthetic stocks will be an improvement in that regard for both irons and scope.
I have the high over the breech mounts on mine, and while super stable, they’re so high I have to set the scope back as far as possible to get my cheek on the highest part of the stock to get a cheek weld and be able to see through the scope.
A low as possible scope base is the answer, as in the mac1 your getting. It should be worth every penny in that regard.
I intend to get one for mine.
I do like how i’m Able to leave my peep sight mounted with the high bases though.... ca’nt see through the peep with the bases I have, but can leave them on and sighted in for back up.
I will say the accuracy of the 392 makes up for any complaints I have with stock design on the new ones.
Much harder to pump than the 880’s you have, but worth the effort on trigger pull lol.
I’m thinking of getting one of the new synthetic stock 392’s when they hit the market and “ maybe” send my wood stock version in to Mac 1 for the steroid treatment.
Hope you like yours as much as I do mine. :D

Buddy,
Thanks for the info, looking forward to getting this gun to keep my 1962 Sheridan Blue streak happy (straight bolt and thumb safety). She was one of my favorite guns growing up ;- ) I may scrounge around and take a pic of her if I can find her easily ;- )

Has anyone tried the Baker Mount for the 392 ..That also looks very clean and sits very low to the bore, but do the grub screws tighten against the receiver and mark it when tightened down ?

-
I didn’t see any store bought mounts I liked so I built these mounts for my 392. The scope is long eye relief. I could have went lower to barrel but decided to have more clearance to load pellets.
-
Those mounts look great Charles!
-
How do you pump a 392 with the scope mounted ? I have the original Sheridan Intermount ( it did cause barrel separation ) but I do not use it anymore. Sheridan fixed my Blue Streak back in 1976 and I have used open or peep sights since. The newer style mounts still look like the pumping is hard with a rear mounted rifle scope. The pistol scope mounted up front probably helps, but I do not care for how it looks.

That is one of my major concerns, although I have a few Daisy 880's and can pump those from just behind the scope. I don't know about the Benji's because of the strength needed to pump these guns ?

My scope sits over the receiver. I pump from ahead of the front sights.
Some people grab the scope mounts and pump.
The first few hundred pellets, the pumping was pretty tough. I tore her down and cleaned out paint flakes and other gunk. A relube before rebuild and now she pumps easier.

I agree, at least early on. I thought the look was terrible until I purchased my first IA mount & familiarized myself to this unorthodox style of shooting. Sight acquisition is immediate & unleashes the full potential of these extremely accurate models (vintage), & quite frankly I think the look is pretty cool. On the other side of the coin, I can see younger AG folks with their excellent eyesight (in most cases) siding with the more traditional sights.
What I will say is I have tried the traditional scopes & mounts & cycling a pumper in this matter is difficult; worse, it jeopardizes the integrity of the air tube & barrel.

Marty, I assume that is a Mac1 mount ? The scout mounting system is very, very fast as I have it on two of my Marlin 4570's, both eyes open and you are on target ... That could be something I need to look at. Also, what scope is that ?
Thanks Marty.

I have one suggestion , shoot a tin or until you find the rifle to be accurate or not before spending money on mounts and such . There are complaints from paint inside the barrel which is extremely hard to remove without causing damage . If you get a good shooter , install a steroid kit from mac1 . Turns the tame little rifle into a beast , I’m getting over 30 fpe shooting BBT slugs from mine and absolutely love it with a Williams peep on it .

Qtips and acetone removed it easily from mine.

The steroid is worth it when you can swing it. It makes it a more versatile and durable rifle with zero downside.
The 1400 is a neat gun, smaller and a little quieter than a 392. Don’t listen to naysayers about 1400 triggers being bad, they aren’t - or don’t have to be.
As far as stock iron sights go, the 392 is better than most. The way the stock rear sight adjusts almost completely eliminates slop or the sight accidentally being bumped off adjustment.
-
This is the buttstock pouch that I will attach to the 392 when I get it. I will also try to fix a sling by using the hole in the spring pin in the front and attaching the sling to the back end using the buttstock pouch as the securing agent ... We will see how that idea works out !

I put a pouch like that on mine too made from leather.
It eventually wound up on the carbine stock of my 1377 though.
It was just right for either of them.

Well, I just ordered a Benji mount from Mac1 and some secret sauce for my soon to arrive 392 .
As I was typing this post, I got notification that my Mac1 order was shipped ..... now that is service. !!! I have known Tim for many, many years and used to visit him when his dad was still alive at the old shop in Gardena, Ca I believe. Tim is one heck of a good guy and REALLY knows his craft ! I also wrote Tim saying I MAY be in the market for some Steroid parts for this gun ;- )
In addition to the stuff I ordered from Tim, I also ordered a NcStar 2.5 power pistol scope from Amazon. I'm usually not a fan of NcStar stuff, but this scope got a lot of good reviews for what it is. It seems the eye relief will be good for a scout configuration on the 392.
When I was first thinking of getting a 392, I thought for sure I was going to keep it in a iron sight configuration, but on re assessment I decided to sight the gun in with the iron sights, keep them on of course and add a scout scope set up. At first I was not sure of the scout set up on this gun, but on thinking it over this is really the most logical way to set this gun up IMHO. The scope will fit lower to the center of the bore and of course you now can pump up the gun in a much more convenient way.
The biggest advantage is the fact that both eyes are open and the gun points on target much, much quicker. I think for this gun this mounting system will be a very good thing (as it is on my two Marlin 1895's in 4570).
When this gun is completed I think it will be pretty cool looking ;- )

Little too late. Looks like you got everything ordered and probably shooting it by now. I’m sure you are having a blast. The BE mounts is a very well made mount. They are the only mounting device I feel absolutely confident, wrapping my hand around scope and mount over top of the breech and pumping. However, the 2 grub screws do dig into the top of the breech. That’s the only complaint. So, I’m glad it was mounted on a 392 and not on any classic airguns.
That NcStar pistol scope is solid!! It’s an incredible value. Forget what I spent $20-30 at Amazon when I got it. Thing is a tank very light and quite clear.

I must say, that scope is a real sleeper. It is just the perfect size for the gun, it is pretty darn clear and the windage and elevation adjustments do work. I have set them and leave them. Having this gun set up with a scout arrangement is just awesome, it is so fast it is scary.
I'm glad I chose the 2.5 power version as it has enough magnification for the airgun distances I shoot with this gun and has a good field of view, and the eye relief for my application works just great .... wish I would have had this set up as a kid !
