Just ran across this and figured at least one person on here would be inspired:
https://blog.ammolytics.com/2019-01-01/project-cheap-rifle-accelerometer.html
This could end the whole "springer hold" debates.

That's a great find. Squeezing enough speed out of an Arduino to do airgun timing takes a little work. It will be interesting to dive in and see what he did. Might even be able to add a trip wire to the muzzle to get a timing mark for the pellet leaving the muzzle.
As for ending the springer hold debates.....I think it would provide some fresh data for the debate to chew on for a while.
Thanks for posting this.

I know this is an old topic but still, this might save someone the hassle of hacking something together
Why not strap one of those drone flight controllers to you rifle?
Saw one with an F7 processor and a 32K sample rate accelerometer for 35 bucks on banggood.
It should also log the data to an SD card so you can easily view the graph on your computer.

It is amazing what you can buy these days, both in terms of processors/computers and sensors. I was a grad student when MEMS accelerometers first hit the market. Then the MEMS gyros came out. I built stuff with both of them. Basic Stamp, Arduino, and all those didn't exist then...A couple years later all the cool stuff started coming out for all the hackers out there...
The other day, I found a Crossbow DMU-AHRS and thought it pretty cool. Then I looked it up and got an education on the current state of the market. True, this unit will fetch a couple hundred dollars used and is technically better than the cheaper stuff out there (especially for what it can actually do all by itself), but still, for this kind of work you might have a look at some of the gyro packages.
Why gyros? Technically, acceleration is one thing, but it is the change in angular orientation that equals a change in point of impact. For example, most image stabilization systems that I know of use gyros to determine and compensate for camera "shake". So, you might have a look at a gyro package and strap one of those on your system...

Sheesh...a couple hundred options, all under $5--who would have thought it possible? I was just looking at the datasheet for that MPU-6050 in the Arduino kit--wow, that's pretty nice...programmable low pass filter, output rates to 8,000 samples per second (can the arduino even take the data that fast?)!
Of course, regarding recoil, the next project someone should try is measuring what a scope actually feels on a Diana 56 as opposed to ordinary air rifles. Or test how effective the Gamo "RRR" (Recoil Reducing Rail) on the Maxxim really is, since that is a rifle you could actually do a "before" and "after" on. That would be interesting to see.
