Newbie, UK Air gun export laws

New to GTA. I have just recently been infected with the airgun bug. This is my first post. Found a ton of good information here, you guys really rock! I bought my first two airguns this spring. One for my son and one for myself. We are really having fun and my son can't wait to shoot every evening. My boy is ten years old, I sat him down and explained just how dangerous this hobby can be and that we can't slip up once. I have hunted for years and spent years in the Army so I am trying to teach him the best safety rules that my dad taught me as well as my favorite drill seargent. Little guy is cautious and has enough respect for the rifles to be just a little scared of them. He is turning out to be a pretty good shot too.
Through some research here I have come to the conclusion that I would really like to find a UK made Webley Tomahawk. I am finding out that they are just about most peoples favorite plinker too, so they don't come up for sale much. I thought if I searched a few of the UK gun forums I could find a few English chaps who no longer are holding onto their Tomahawks. I have found a few but I have some questions of you collectors out there. It seems as if the UK export/shipping laws forbid export of air rifles. Is this true? Even if I found a Webley in good shape in the UK I couldn't get it shipped here? Searching US classifieds only brings up post 2007 Webleys... not interested. Is there a better way to find one of these rarely sold, UK made beauties? It doesn't seem like airgunning has taken off in Utah so I don't have many local dealers to talk to. A little advice, would be greatly appreciated. -Utahslim

Thanks to Mouse, Mack and Socalbob.
Looks as if I will have a long love affair with this sport. Sounds like I will just have to be very diligent and really search for a UK made Webley. I still don't know if a dealer or a private seller from the UK can ship an airgun stateside. Have any of you dealt with UK sellers? Have you had an airgun shipped here? I just figured if they (Webley) were made in Birmingham that more of them would be located over there. Like searching for a Ford in the US.... made here, market flooded with used ones.

Their weren't very many U.K. Tommys or even fewer Long Bows sent here to the U.S. to begin with they were only in production for 2yrs before Webley went belly up so most people who have them arn't parting with them! and if they do you'll pay for them.

Those guns require a FAC license in UK so they are not that common there either. I don't know if there was a 12ft/lbs version made though.

Just a note... Gene has imported some airguns from the UK and there was no problem. We did have to do some work on them to upgrade and increase the power to US standards though.

Many thanks guys, I even got a reply from the one, and only, CharlieDa Tuna. I am humbled. Let me tell you how I found this sight. I was browsing Amazon for airgun reviews. A newbie has to start somewhere, right? Anyway, some of the reviews mentioned how this gun or that gun had a poor trigger but with help from one of CharlieDa Tuna's triggers, groups would be much tighter. I researched GTX-III and from there linked to GTA.
I am glad to hear that there is a chance to get an airgun from the UK shipped here if I find one. It may cost me an arm and a leg to ship it, I will have to weigh that fact if I get to that point. I was aware that they reduced the power of their airguns but I couldn't figure out their export laws until last night. If I am reading it correctly, don't quote me hear, I am not an export lawyer, UK dealers can only ship to other licensed dealers, not to your front porch. There is an exception, private sellers can ship second hand guns door to door. I will keep searching, I think half the fun of this sport is the hunt for a prized possesion that seems to be just out of reach. The best things in life, you got to work for, right? Why a Webley, you ask? I worked as a machinist for Rolls Royce for 15 years. The combination of good engineering and experienced craftsman can't be beat. British machinists are not just factory worker drones. They are journeyman with great skills. They train for years before they are turned loose on their own. That is why I lean towards old fashioned British craftsmanship at the moment.
A side note: Just recently a WWII era Rolls Royce engine off of a fighter was disassembled. They still have the old blueprints! The parts were cleaned and closely examined and measured with today's precision gauging. The engineers working on this project were amazed at the tight tolerances. All of the critical-to-flight parts were very close to the mean. They believe that even with today's machine centers it would take a lot of skill to get that close. Now, that is craftsmanship, and 70 years ago. Maybe the Webley factory had that much skill, and that is why nobody gives up their guns these days. -Jim
